OLD DOGS and Children ... and Maybe Some Older People Too...

Originally Published: Mar 8, 2009

Sad to note as the little guy had to be put down today. We will miss him.

I remember when we got him. I still picture the kids wide eyed with excitement as he arrived.

The dogEverybody claimed him. He made the rounds. Buddies oohed with jealousy and clamored to their parents for their own little dog.

Sleep overs in various bedrooms were the rage (and sometimes arguments). He knew every friend and every bedroom.

The kids grew older, found other hormonal and economic interests, and thankfully moved on.

But he didn't.

He searched for a while, looking for the remnants of his youth, but found the same old food bearers.

He still alerts us about potential danger with every ring of the door bell, and still hates the neighbor's cat.

Squirrels are sworn enemies, but are harder to see and chase. His steps are slower and measured, as are his days.

The Vet loves to see him. ($) and he still hates that place too.

We continue daily walks, pet him, and tell him "good boy" with a pat on the head. He is, and always will be, our dog.

So a gentle reminder to all those deciding to get a pet. Pick one that you want. Times change but the loyalty of your pet doesn't. They grow old with us.

They are always glad to see you. And cats love the sound of a can opener. You think you own them, it's the other way around. You are their staff. Animals make the home, family.

Claude, thank you for a wonderful post. All too many times people forget the four legged family members. Enjoy all the time you can with him.

Putting down a pet is so hard - I've had to do it twice.  We now have two dogs (ages 7 and 1) and I dread the day.  A vet on TV once said something very wise, though:  "The greatest gift we can give our pets is the gift of peace."

Shelly - When the world understands that pets tug the heart, perhaps we will gain an understanding. Great response

Oh sorry, Claude and Jane.  That is the saddest thing and one of the reasons I can't get a dog.

Claude, losing a pet is so heart breaking. I lost my 2 dogs within 6 months of each other from battling with cancers Seren was 12 1/2 (RIP Aug 2009) and my Xena just turned 12 (RIP Feb 2010). We now have 2 littermate puppies to fill the void since I just don't know how to be without my four legged friends. I have had the honor of raising 8 dogs & 5 cats, giving them the best life I could - each will forever have a special place in my heart. So sorry for your loss - my prayers are with you and family.

Great reminder of how much pets give back to us!  My "guys" area always waiting for me when I come home * on the deck in the warm weather and in the house when it turns cold!!!

Wallace - I'll bet your guys are spoiled rotten (and well deserved). They look great ! Nothing beats the "welcome home" that a loved dog gives back.

isn`t it amazing you get them for a pet, and then they become part of the family, and when something happens to them its like it your own child.

Ah Claude & Jane, I'm sorry to hear of the passing of your best friend.  We too had to make that decision some years back.  Just know that you gave him a happy home for his years on earth and now he's pain free and running with the big  (& little) dogs in fields that never end.  Being with him as he passed is all they ask of us in their final days.  Yes it's painful when they leave us, but so very worth the time we have together!  Sending you hugs...

Pamela

Claude- Sometimes life brings us to a decision that is hard but wise. It is never easy saying goodbye to a pet. They are so unabashedly loving, forever faithful and always forgiving. Wishing you much peace in knowing you did the right thing because in my heart I know you did. I have been there.
