Many of you may know or have seen the Wheeler Mission in Downtown Indianapolis.  This mission originated in 1893 and has been addressing Indianapolis' poor and needy ever since.  It is a place where the homeless may come to get a warm meal or find shelter for the night.  It also has a food pantry and distributes more than 30 tons of food each year.  While these things are important, their mission also includes helping people change their lives.

One way we as a community can help is to participate in some small way with the 4th Annual Drumstick Dash which will be held November 23, 2006 at 9a.m. on Connell Street in Broad Ripple.  This is located west of the High School.  Last years event had close to 2400 walkers/runners for the 4.5 mile course.  Besides the walk/run you can also come dressed as a turkey, pumpkin or some other type Thanksgiving symbol.  Prizes will be awarded by the sponsors for the best costume.

The event has been growing each year and if you would like to participate please click Drumstick Dash to register and receive more information.

Below are the statistics for last month. . .

  • There are as many as 15,000 people who are homeless in our city every year
  • Total lodging provided: 5,981
  • Total number of meals served: 18,643
  • Total number of grocery bags distributed: 312
  • 68 men were on our "Special Needs" program: that's more than ever before on that program

Some of us are not as fortunate and with the winter weather and Holidays coming upon us, this is a wonderful way to show your giving spirit.  For more information about the Wheeler Mission please visit their site http://www.wmm.org/v2/nav.asp?lnk=/content/ministries_men/homeless_men.shtml and find out where you can help.  Thanks for caring!
