A broker was dismayed when a brand new real estate office much like his own opened up next door and erected a huge sign which read ‘BEST AGENTS.’

He was horrified when another competitor opened up on his right, and announced its arrival with an even larger sign, reading ‘LOWEST COMMISSIONS.’

The broker panicked, until he got an idea. He put the biggest sign of all over his own real estate office. It read: ‘MAIN ENTRANCE.

You got to say he was definitely thinking outside of the box.

Hi Phil,

I came across this little nugget when I was reading a marketing book some time ago.  I don't know how true it is, but  definitely was a clever idea.   I think the point is that we have to be flexible, creative and think outside of the box sometimes.

Great marketing concept to at least get the people thinking about the sign. Yes, Doretha that's thinking out of the box.

Clever fellow.

True story. In the good old days there were a lot more independent businesses. They all used trucking companies to carry their merchandise to them from vendors. The stores would get to choose their freight company themselves. A large number of buyers, too lazy or too busy, to look up the least expensive company, would simply write the phrase "best way" in the box to designate the carrier.

One very smart trucking firm soon came up with the name "Best Way Trucking". Guess who did a lot of business?

All the more reason to keep assessing the market and positioning to win as the variables keep changing.  Great story.

As I read this it got me to thinking that competetion can be a good thing. We need to remind ourselves to be fresh in our marketing. Looking forward to that in 2011.
