I've posted before about our local Oshawa treasure known as Parkwood, the R.S. McLaughlin Estate. If you haven't been out to a tour of this amazing piece of local history, there is no better time than this weekend when, in addition to the regular tours, the mansion hosts one of it's rare tours of the basement.
I know, it doesn't sound all that exciting, but for those of you who like to know how things work and what's behind that door or are just curious to see something that few get to see, this is the thing for you!
Parkwood Estates will open the doors to the basement to the public for 2 days only, November 6th & 7th - thats this weekend!
This is a rare opportunity to glimpse into the service areas of the estate and includes the family vault, the central clockworks system (all the clocks in the house were connected to a central works in the basement - how progressive is that for early 1900's??!), the elevator engine room, the cannery & more.
The basement tour also offers a glimpse of the 10 foot ceilings and mechanical features that kept the 55
room masion functioning through the years it served as the family home of Colonel R. Samuel McLaughlin, the founder of General Motors, and his family.
Guided tours of the lower level will be available Saturday November 6th and Sunday November 7th from 10:30am to 4pm. Admission is $10 per person.
Tours of the mansion will also be available at regular admission rates for those days.
Parkwood is a designated National Historical Site and is located at 270 Simcoe Street North at the corner of Adelaide Street.
Parkwood is a favourite destination for at least one member of the Dianna Mandzuk Team, Paula Kennedy enjoys strolling the incredible gardens several times throughout the summer with camera in hand and you can bet will be there to see this rare treat this weekend touring through the basement of the mansion!
