It amazes me how people don't understand cutting corner it can end up costly so much in heating and cooling bills. If you have insulating the attic with home made material its time to rethink.

Via Chrissy Doremus ~ U.S. Inspect ~ Home Inspections (U.S. Inspect):

Packing Peanuts and Styrofoam used as attic insulation

ANSWER: Improper Attic Insulation

While this homeowner may get a nod for creativity, unfortunately, a failing grade is what he gets if he thinks he's insulating his attic! Yes, Styrofoam (polystyrene) is a commonly used insulating material, but Styrofoam packing material, foam peanuts, and plastic bags will probably never accomplish the goal intended, especially just scattered about like in the picture above.

Styrofoam (actually a brand name of Dow Company) is a great lightweight and waterproof material that makes an excellent insulating product (Again, not the same as the material shown above). It is sometimes referred to as "blueboard." For residential insulation, it is usually cut into sheets or slabs and attached to the frame of the home during construction. Properly installed, it will not allow heat to transfer into or out of an area, and that translates into lower energy costs.

Now, would someone please hit the buzzer, have the contestant sit down, and have him clean up the attic as soon as he gets home! Thanks to U.S. Inspect California inspector, Jerry Blodgett for sharing this picture with us.

It sounds to me that this homeowner has a zeal for recycling. Good article.

What a creative use of a landfill material! While it may not get the R factor they were shooting for, it sure is an environmentally friendly solution on what to do with all that styrofoam we accumulate. Great picture.
