I am not a plumber.  When I occasionally embark upon a plumbing task usually within a few minutes  I am wondering if my short term memory has begun to fail.
This morning I decided to tackle the dripping faucet problem in the guest bathroom.

Removing the single piece unit that shuts off both the hot and cold water was quite easy.  I took a photo of the unit that dispenses the water and carried the camera with me to my local Ace Hardware at Tates Creek Center.  Digital pictures are a insurance for my visual memory. Ace doesn't always have what I need but they are much closer and much more customer friendly than the big chain stores.  The Ace help quickly determined my part was discontinued brand and recommended I make a quick trip downtown to Day's Plumbing Supply.  The service desk man immediately identified the part and after only a couple of minutes returned with the needed pieces.  They he face plate was not included but I was overjoyed to know I wasn't going to have to hire a plumber.  I must have looked like an amateur because the gentleman was kind enough to make sure I knew how all the parts went together.  There were two small springs with rubber inserts hiding in the original housing so I was grateful for the help.  I was anxious to get home and impress my wife with my plumbing skills.

Getting all the pieces in the right place was easier than anticipated.  Ooops!  I am ready to put the face plate back on but can find only one of the finishing screws.  After quickly looking under all the debris and  asking Kathy to help me scour the bath for the rogue screw I gave up and reluctantly drove back to Ace. I wasn't expecting to find a four inch screw that would work.  In fact I was contemplating doing an online search.

I walked into Ace and asked  if they had a bolt like the one I was carrying.  Immediately a young man grabbed a bolt lying on the counter and said, I found this earlier on the floor.  I resisted giving that young man a big kiss but did profusely thank him for not throwing the bolt away.  As I was driving back home I mused about whether that would ever happen at a big chain store.   I doubt it.

Three hours and I have conquered the dripping faucet.  I have saved some water, saved some money and  proved the worth of my local hardware store.

I love the local hardware store.  I always go past the kids up at the counter and find the old fart sitting on the stool in the back of the store.  He understands what you talking about when you tell him you need a thingamajig to fix your doohickey.  He'll take you out in the store, show you what you need to buy and help you understand how it goes together.  Can't get that kind of service at the big box stores.

Our local Ace has an incredible amount of inventory. They have things the box stores would never dream of handling.

Hi Erby and Jeff,

Another thing that I really like about my Ace is they make very good keys.  The Box stores somehow make keys that stick, not helpful when you want to get into a house quickly.
