Because of the weather in San Diego, many of us don't use our central heating systems very often, and when we do get cold, we'll often jump into a warm bed or close a door and plug in the space heater for whatever room we happen to be in. We find it less expensive to heat one room than to heat the whole house, especially since we spend most of our time in our home office. Although space heaters are an easy way to heat a room, anything that gets hot can be dangerous, and over 25,000 fires and 300 deaths EACH YEAR(!) are caused by space heaters. Here are some tips to help you use space heaters safely: ♪♫♫♫♪ If you're looking for a great real estate agent in San Diego, well, I'm available 24/7, so feel free to contact me by phone or email. Jim how informative, BTW we do not own one we just turn the gas fireplace "instant LA ambiance" on and it generates enough heat:)))
Huh, I did not know that you should not plug a space heater into a power strip. Thanks, Jim.
Thanks for the tip Jim. My wife likes it a lot cooler than I do so soon I will be putting one in my office.
Guilty .. I plug a space heater in my power strip at the office. It gets so terribly cold that I have a blanket, coat and space heater going. My assistant changes her shoes to furry bedroom slippers to keep warm. The space heater is great but guess I better find another method to plug it in. Thanks for the safety tips.
Good information Jim. I am guilty of quite a few of these. I will have to re-evaluate how my space heater is situated. We haven't needed it yet, so I am safe for now!
Since we had a space heater fire in our house when I was in high school, I'd like to add one to you lists. DON'T TRY TO UPGRADE YOUR PLUG TO GET MORE JUICE OUT OF IT. My Dad did this. Chopped the electrical cord, somehow affixed a new plug and three months later...FIRE! Thankfully, my Mom was home at the time, saw the spark out of the corner of her eye, pulled the plug from the wall, put out the fire on the cord, then shut off all the electricity to the home before calling the fire department. That could have been a catastrophe.
Jim, Great info. And if you use one in your bathroom, like my dad used to do, keep it way from the sink and tub! Keep it on the floor like you suggested.
Glad to hear Chris Ann's mom saved the day at her house!

Hi Jim, my mother loved to use her space heater when she was alive. I love the picture with all the plugs plugged into the various sockets -- what an electrical hazard.
We went through this too when I was little. It's amazing how we survived our childhoods. Thanks for a great safety post!
Jim, I'm here via Jackie Connelly-Fornuff. I'm not a big fan of space heaters, but when used properly they do a good job. Here's a horror story for you; I knew someone who hard wired several space heaters in his home because he couldn't afford to fix or replace his old furnace that broke (actually I think he's just too cheap to replace it)...I'm waiting for the phone call that his house burned down.
Jim, these are GREAT points for families this time of year, as the temperatures drop.
