Whether you ran or walked or watched, your Thanksgiving Day got off to a great start knowing you "moved your feet so others can eat!"

move your feet so others can eat!

On Thanksgiving morning in 2009, we had 7,582 runners, walkers, strollers, volunteers and well-behaved dogs participating in the StellarOne Drumstick Dash 5K Run & Family Walk. This event has quickly become Roanoke's biggest family reunion with families coming from all over the United States.

Fast facts from the 2009 event:

  • Families from 36 different states came together last year to make this the largest race in the region and Roanoke's biggest family reunion
  • The route was held in beautiful downtown Roanoke ending at the historic Farmer's Market - this is the one event and the one day that downtown streets can be closed for an event of this size
  • 24 groups of musicians performed along the route for the enjoyment of the runners and walkers
  • 65 corporate sponsors, churches and media partners provided financial support and in-kind donations to make the StellarOne Drumstick Dash possible.
  • Over $150,000 was raised from the Drumstick Dash
  • Funds raised provided food and safe shelter for an average of 366 people each night at the Rescue Mission. All proceeds from the StellarOne Drumstick Dash benefit The Rescue Mission.

Your gift really counts because the Rescue Mission does not accept Federal, State or City funds.

I think Thanksgiving morning fun runs are the best idea.  And of course one that supports a good cause is even better.
