How's that home warranty working out for you?

I had a home warranty experience this week that has me a bit miffed. I'm having a problem with my automatic garage door. What exactly, when it comes to my garage door opener, is covered?

I called my home warranty company and asked if the side rails and rollers were covered in my plan. We had a bit of confusion with terminology at first, but the young gal who answered my questions said yes, they were covered. So I placed a service call.

Sixty dollars later for the service fee, the garage door specialist calls to tell me that my home warranty company has denied coverage, the side rail that is coming apart is a part of the door, not the opener.

I called my home warranty and told them I just spent sixty dollars needlessly, why did they tell me that the rails and rollers were covered? I was told they would pull the recorded call and a supervisor would listen to the conversation. OK, let's see how this plays out.

Yesterday I get an automated call telling me that the open ticket for my electrical problem has been closed. What? After calling them one more time, I was told there were no notes of me ever calling except to place a service call. Wow ... and guess what I got in the mail that same day? My annual renewal notice for my home warranty.

As far as the anatomy of a garage door goes, I get it. I can disengage my garage door from the automatic opener and raise the door myself. They are right, the rollers and rails are not part of the door opener. I guess I need to do some research before placing service calls. And maybe home warranty companies could train their CSR's a little better.

BLOG UPDATE: The home warranty company reviewed the recorded phone call and determined that I was indeed given the wrong information. They are re-imbursing me the $60.00 I paid for the initial service call.

Loreena - I'm feeling kind of stupid silly now, since I have done the research and found that they are right. But I will call again on Monday.

Don - I'll update my blog after I talk to them on Monday.

Terrie - I found my paperwork and looked up the garage door opener. I didn't know what the parts of the garage door were called. The rail/trolly assembly is covered, not the track. I guess I should have said "track", not "rail".

Lisa - I just had a buyer purchase a home warranty to help use up his closing cost credits which would have gone back to the seller. If I'm going to be suggesting home warranties I'd better get on board and learn more about what they cover and how they work.

Dave - this is only the second service call I have made in 4 years. The first was my water heater. That call went a little better, I didn't have to describe any parts when I told them about the puddle of water I had in my garage.

Home Warranties can be frustrating. The last time I needed service it took them four days to get here. All the while, my Kitchen Sink would not drain. I am pleased that it was covered though. - David

I can only say I've had great experiences with AmericanHomeShield, so I hope it's a different company?

I would certainly want to know who this company is.  Right or wrong, the process was not handled professionally.

My client got a new Water Heater (not parts, but a whole new Water Heater).    Another Client got a new Air Compressor for the HVAC unit.   Both of these Buyers paid $100 deductibles.

But I have heard some nightmare stories like yours, Cynthia.   They owe you $60 - hopefully they will pay it.

Duh. The rails are a part of the mechanical system under our US Home Warranty coverage. I'm not sure about my other home warranty coverages.

Michael - scratching my head with a shovel probably won't hurt as much as pounding my forehead against bricks.

David - they ARE frustrating. My house is 20 years old with all original appliances, so I thought it was time to be covered.

Tammy - LOL, you have an amazing way of getting information. All I can say is hmmmmm.

Jane - I'm thinking that on Monday when more managers are available I should be able to get this straightened out. I would love to hear the recorded conversation.

Fred - deductibles? really?

Carla - I'm going to compare my home warranty company with others before I renew. I've got the same one that Tammy is pleased with. I'll check out US Home Warranty and Fidelity as well.

Kim - LOL, welcome to my world!

Ssssssyntia, the home warranty performance is largely a function of the subcontractors doing the service.  Same home warranty, different calls, different companies.  The first I was " " this close to throwing out of my house, the other was fantastic.  Service companies should know that if you go into a REALTOR's home, essentially call them a liar, and NOT expect it to get back to the home warranty rep.  We weren't the first to complain, and they don't work for the warranty company any longer.

Nevin - LOL, that's funny!

BLiz - That's a good idea, I'm going to call my rep. Good grief, I've sold enough of their policies to new home buyers, they could take enough time to check my story.

Peggy - LOL, I'd just like to get the $60 back. The rest I feel I should have known. Well, I do now. I've been studying automatic garage door mechanisms and I know all the names of the parts and which parts are covered. If nothing else, it will be a $60 education that I can pass onto my buyers. I'm not fuming by any means, just a little miffed which usually means I should have known better.

Tammy - you are a riot!

Charles - they have to make money, so more $$ is going in than coming out. I'll give them one more chance.
