The Forum in Carlsbad - Bye Bye Bookstore, Hello HomeBuyers

Carlsbad Real EstateI just got back from The Forum in Carlsbad, which is just a hop, skip, and a jump from my house. I had to do a spot of retail therapy. It was a busy weekend. One of the Junior Zavala clan had a ton of homework, a community service project, and a Robotics team meeting. Of course, most parents may agree that when Junior has those activities, Mom has all of those activities as well. No rest for the weary.

Truth be told, I was just going to head over to Border’s to buy a book. I was shocked to see that the Border’s Bookstore in The Forum is going out of business. Can you imagine? A bookstore going out of business! Everything was reduced, and the place was packed. Unfortunately, I could not find the book that I wanted, but managed to find a few others instead. Also, I took advantage of the sale to pick up a few holiday gifts.

What’s happening to our world when bookstores are going out of business? (And, not the little ones like in that Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks movie.) But, the big guy is going out of business. Well, I think that the folks at Border’s can probably thank the folks at the Apple Store right next door. With the iPad (and, of course, the Kindle), who needs a book with pages made of actual paper?

Nevertheless, The Forum in Carlsbad has a lot of great stores (that hopefully will not go out of business any time soon). The include Tilly’s, Anthropologie, Talbot’s, J.Jill, and The Loft among other great women’s clothing stores. There is also the Apple Store, Sur le Table, Jos. A. Bank, Lulu Lemon, and Z Gallerie. They say that an Urban Outfitters will be replacing Border’s, but I will still be a little upset that the bookstore will be gone.

There are a bunch of other stores at The Forum, and there are also great places to eat. There is a Panera (sandwiches, soups and salads), Casa de Bandini (Mexican), and a Coldstone Creamery for dessert. One of our family’s favorite restaurants is The Counter. They have over 300,000 different choices for burgers (crazy, I know). And, if you don’t want to eat at The Forum, you can buy food at Jimbo’s Naturally! (a natural food grocery store).

Of course, Carlsbad is also famous for its great weather. Sitting right on the Pacific Ocean, just about 25 miles north of San Diego, it’s a great place to live (and to shop).

Melissa,

As fewer and fewer people see your face in a fashionable high brow book, sipping snutty coffee, it just makes more sense to buy the undrinkable at Mc Donald's drive through and read a bootlegged Internet copy of some thing that really interest you.

Yes it is killing me too! I can't stand the fact that major book stores are closing. It is just too sad. I wasn't surprised when news paper company's started closing due not enough sales of the paper but BOOK STORES!

Come on give us a break!...I love to go and browse and buy a book or two. I like to read a lot of books and may well have read over a thousand in my life time. I hate the idea of not being able to pick up a hard or paper back.

What can we do to save our book stores?

Melissa,

My richer friends have all switched to e-books. We poorer folks hit the library to borrow or buy discards for $1.00.  Love the perspective of your photo, even if things aren't looking up for that Borders...

As much as I appreciate what technology has to offer, I still say that real books beats e-books. After all, those books made of paper holds much more enjoyment and value. It is sad very sad to have a good book store close ....

Melissa, I am one that prefers to turn the page rather clicking on an arrow or scrolling down to read books.  I understand that technology will overtake books sooner than we think possible, it doesn't mean that I like it.  Carlsbad is such a beautiful city, we love it there!

Hi Melissa,

In the next shopping center (less than a 1/4 of mile away) has a much larger and longer established Barnes and Noble.  Maybe 2 mega bookstores in such a close proximity wasn't a good idea.  I heard that Urban Outfitters and H&M are going in.
