Granite Vs Quartz: Who wins and why?

Granite Vs Quartz: Who wins and why? We all know that granite has been all the rage for kitchens and bathrooms for some time now. But I see quartz gaining momentum and even surpassing granite. As a Redesigner as well as a Home Stager, I try to keep current of what's hots and what's not. And lately, I've notice a trend towards quartz. And with good reason, here why:

  1. There is no need to seal quartz, you do have to seal granite (unless engineered) every year.
  2. Quartz is less porous then granite, making it more resisted to bacteria.
  3. Quartz although is a natural stone, it is mixed with polymers resin, making it the best of both worlds, manmade and natural.
  4. Granite, unless engineer gives off gasses called radon, which has been linked to lung cancer.
  5. Granite has veins which can crack or chip. Quartz does not.
  6. Quartz comes in many different colors.
  7. Nothing beats the look of granite natural patterns.

According to the countertop industry trends, there has been a shift from granite to quartz. As a matter of fact quartz has seen of growth of 13% as oppose to granite 5%. More and more designer and architects are choosing quartz over granite.

So what is quartz? Quartz is a silicone dioxide and forms individual crystals, patterns and colors. Quartz is then manufactured with a mixture of 93% quartz and 7% pigments and resin. The ratio can be change, the lower the quartz material, the lower the price and quality.

Granite for all its beauty, has flaws. Engineer granite has the flaws engineered out, just like quartz. The winner is Quartz, unless it's engineered granite. In which case, they became equal.

I used Quartz in my kitchen a few years back and didn't even consider Granite. The bacteria issue was number one in my decision process but all the other downfalls helped in the decision as well. In all the dozens and dozens of Candice Olson episodes I have watched I have never seen one that she uses Granite in a kitchen. And I trust Candice. :)

Carmela - I'd have to go with quartz, less work and besides, everyone has granite and I'd rather be unique.

Carmela I have been thinking about this subject.  It was very much on my mind today at my open house where the Countertops were quartz.

Thanks Birgit,

Jennifer, How are the buyers responding to it?

David, love concert counters, just not sure if it's mainstream yet which could hurt for resale.

Over 35 years of building homes at Lake Tahoe/Truckee, CA, we installed 100's of granite countertops.  While the look changes with each slab and its variation in color, clients wanted nothing else, for years.  Quartz is the newest trend that clients in high end homes want....and concrete (love the look and low maintainance). A new product Vetrazzo, made from recylced glass is beautiful, durable, and affordable...check it out: vetrazzo.com.  I want to use this product in my next house.

Thanks Teri for the update. I also happen to like concrete but I don't think it's mainstream yet. This might hurt you during resale. They say it takes ten years for a trend to come in and out. i think we may have to wait a bit for concrete.

Carmela, great post!  I have honed Black Absolute Granite in my kitchen and love it. I sealed it once ( 3 years ago) and keep forgetting to do it again and it's fine.  Honed Granite is porous but I've found it stands up to everything ( 3 messy kids) and looks classic in my 90 year old house. I chose to go with it because there is not much chance it will go out of style anytime soon since it's not shiny and loud like a lot of Granite.  You are right about trends changing every 10 years and I think that's why you see a lot of Quartz now, but just like Granite it too will wane in popularity once it's around for 10 years.

That is good to know and when we see quarts we will know that the builder is on the cutting edge.

This is a great post.  I work on a lot of kitchens.  Even though I understand the benefits of quartz, by I far, I prefer the look of granite and that's what I see most customers doing, esp when they are working w/ designers.  Usually when I see quartz it's because someone went to a place like kitchen Magic or a big box store.  Further, most home buyers appear to prefer granite because it looks nicer and it's a more "natural" product.

Hello luci, My sister also has granite and i don't think she has sealed it in awhile as well. It does hold up but I believe people want a change. And change is good. But I don't think that granite will ever really go away.

Debbie, you've made some good point. People are still very much "In Love" with granite. it will, mostly likely, never really go out completely, but I do like the fact that quartz gives you so many color choices and that is alway good in my book.

Carmela ~ thanks for the post.  It's been interesting to read the comments.   Some of the LEED homes that I've staged have used Caesarstone (quartz) counters, so we know that's an eco-friendly product (93% natural materials).  I like both products but would likely go with quartz in the future.

Hello Maureen, I happen to like both products as well but I too am lending towards quartz.

I did some research on quartz about six months ago an dit does seem to be a better choice than granite.

I too, was going back & forth between granite and quartz.  I went with the granite.  I just didn't like the look of the quartz.  It appears plastic to me.

I tend to have more liking for quartz as it has a non porous quality as mentioned in this article. Moreover quartz makes luxurious kitchen countertops and bathroom decor and thus makes your home look beautiful.
