Hi Dennis!  I don't have that great of a sense of smell.  If I am showing a home and I can smell the pets......it's bad!  I showed a home last week that was perfect in every way, EXCEPT for the pet odor.  It was clean, no food dishes, fur or pet toys anywhere.  I couldn't detect the odor in this one but the buyer's could and that was the end of it.

Ann, I also lost a potential buyer to pet smell. My tenants had moved out, I had cleaned but had not collected the keys yet. They dropped their dog off while they went shopping. He had an accident, the house showed the next morning before I knew what had happened.

I collected the keys immediately.

Thanks for the comment.

Dennis,

What about stinky inspectors? I do agree pets and cigarettes can be a turn off to many.

Hi Dennis,

I just went on a listing appointment on Friday and when I stepped inside the home the first thing that greeted me was the smell of cat urine! During the course of our conversation of how to improve the home for sale I mentioned maybe putting the litter box out on the back porch and they said they didn't have a litter box in the home. They were so used to the smell they didn't even notice it! I suggested they have the carpets professionally cleaned before listing their home and blocking the small doggie door into their home as they told me that one morning they woke up to see a strange male cat who strayed in during the night sleeping on their living room couch!
