Scamming the Scammers a Personal Odyssey

By
Real Estate Agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Verani Realty

I was just reading a blog from Carol Williams in regards to

:Beware: Are the Scammers Infiltrating Active Rain?

Well, I just want to tell you that this type of infiltration on the web is running rampant and these types of people are getting away with preying on the innocent and the not so savvy consumer.

In February we put our class A motorhome up for sale. I was amazed at the amount of emails I received from Nigerian Scammers who wanted to buy my motor home.

Here is an example of what was emailed to me.

 I replied in BOLD:

(1) How many times has the car been re-painted  0

(2) Hope the oil is changed. It is due

(3) Are you the owner before placing it for sale? yes

(4) If yes, for how long did you use the car? 3 years

(5) Has the car been involve in  accident? NO

(6) How often do you service the car? When needed

 Bottom price 39,995.00

 He replies

 Hello,

I have discussed about your car with my client. Before he travelled out for a bussiness trip. My client is from Canada and he has finally accepted your price, he hopes the engine is Serviced.
However, My client made out a certified cashiers check of $47,995 before he travelled for the business trip, the amount on the check he deposited for the car is for the total expenses which includes the purchase of your car, the pick up of the Car from its present location and the shipping charges/other Necessary Shipping
arrangements.
However he has instructed us to carry on with this transaction. So you're required to deduct the cost of your car $39,995 and send the balance of $8,000 to the shipper via moneygram Transfer to enable him offset shipping charges/arrangements. Once the transaction is concluded and the check clears my agent will be coming for the Pick Up of the car from its present location, on an open vehicle and then Drive to a pre-paid shipper for shippment, and also conclude other necessary shipping arrangements. So you don't have to bother yourself about the pick up and shipping arrangements, while title papers and other necessary documents will be sent by you via courier service to my Customer.

Please confirm this and provide name, address and phone number for check payment to be delivered to you via courier service.

Yours truly,

bob scott.

This is just a sample of the many  emails I received while trying to sell our motorhome.

Just to let you know the motor home was for sale for $ 23,900.00. when I replied I told him $39,995.00 just to see what he would say.

US Citizens approximately lose $ 2,000,000,000.00 dollars each year to these scammers.

Although I found many of the emails I received humorous, I became concerned because many people were duped by similar emails. There were many people that actually got scammed out of thousands of dollars.

We should all be aware of these types of emails.

I am sure all of you have come across these types of emails.

Unfortunately there are many that have fallen for it.

If you want a really good laugh visit Busted Up Cowgirl Scam the Scammer webpage.

She has humorous postings here at how she actually makes these scammers spend money before she slams the door shut on them. A MUST READ….

Jay, Yes... these scams are rampant and I can't believe they are still circulating these kind of ruses.  Must still be a unsuspecting soles out there.  Apparently, they send the BIG check, cleverly disguised as a  certified check... then the unsuspecting victim reimburses them the difference and before they realize the original check was fake, the vicim has lost the funds that was supposed to be the difference.  It's disgusting.

It certainly is disgusting and what is sad is there are people out there that are well educated that still fall for this.

 Unbelievable!!

How sad that these people even exist.  It does upset me when I get those kinds of emails, as I find myself thinking about the people who do fall prey to them.  There must be plenty out there otherwise they wouldn't keep it up.

I played around with one who contacted me from England about some 'client' of his who wanted to buy real estate in America.  We went back and forth several times and then he began talking about transferring money, etc.  I got tired of it at that point and stopped emailing him.  Guess he moved on to greener pastures.

These scammers need to be scammed back!  It's just plain awful that people could do this to another human being.  Usually the people being scammed are the ones that most need the money, the elderly.  How do they sleep at night???

Hi Chris,

Not sure if you had a chance to read Busted Up Cowgirl Scam the Scammer webpage. There are funny scenarios how she scams them back.

I kept one on the hook for a few weeks once and then got tired of him and cut him loose.  Enjoy!

Thanks Jay
