Operation Turkey in Austin

This Thanksgiving (November 25, 2010), consider helping feed thousands of homeless and underprivileged people through Operation Turkey in Austin. With Thanksgiving only 2 1/2 weeks away, I'll bet you are busy with preparations for spending time with your family and filling them up on turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie.  However, there are hundreds of Austin families that won't have anything to eat.  Operation Turkey in Austin helps feed families and others in need on Thanksgiving.

Operation Turkey doesn't just feed the hungry on Thanksgiving, though.  They also provide clothes and other necessary items.  With the help of Austin volunteers (which include families, businesses and other individuals), Operation Turkey cooks and packs hot meals that are delivered to the local homeless population.

Operation Turkey does rely heavily on the help of volunteers to get their good deeds done.  You don't have to do it all.  If you love to cook, they'll put you to work on Thanksgiving morning to cook the meals.  If you would rather spend time sorting through donations or packaging the food in to-go containers, that would be great, too.  And, if you want to interact directly with those that benefit from Operation Turkey's efforts, help is definitely needed for delivering these meals and other donations.  Just click here to sign up as an Operation Turkey volunteer in Austin.

There are two locations to go to help cook, sort, package and deliver:

Near Downtown/South Austin - Bikinis Sports Bar & Grill (214 E 6th Street, Austin), 512-469-0001
Near Central/North Austin - Bikinis Sports Bar & Grill (6901 N IH35, Austin), 512-454-2247

All volunteers are asked to show up at their location on Thanksgiving morning between 9 and 9:30am.  Everyone is welcome, including kids that are accompanied by their parent or guardian.  Make sure you wear comfortable clothes and closed-toed shoes.  The schedule to get everything done is from 9am to noon on Thursday, November 25th.  You can do some good for the local Austin community and get home in plenty of time to spend time with your family.

If you can't make it in person to help out with Operation Turkey in Austin, you can donate online or mail a donation to:

Operation Turkey Fund
PO Box 5159
Austin, TX 78763

If you are going to be anywhere in the area on Thanksgiving, please consider coming down to help Operation Turkey in Austin get meals and donations together to help those less fortunate have a happy Thanksgiving.  You'll feel good doing it and you'll make many local Austin residents feel great, too.
