Baby's First Road Trip - The 10: 1 Ratio

By

Probably throughout the course of human history, every time "the baby" has been taken out for a trip, it demanded 10 times the baby's weight in stuff to make that trip possible.  The historical 10: 1 ratio.

For all I know, after the invention of the wheel, came the invention of the first baby wagon to carry all the "baby's stuff."

What the Indians did not show you is that following that compact little papoose was a pack horse laden down with "baby's stuff!"  The Eskimos wrap baby up in a walrus pouch, with another dog sled to follow piled high with more of "baby's stuff."  Laplanders probably have a second, or third, reindeer following behind for, well, for "baby's stuff."  Heck, for all I know the cave man dragged his woman by her hair with one hand, with baby perched on her stomach, and the other hand dragged a dug-out log full of "baby's stuff!"

Such it was for my grand baby's first road trip.  "Baby's stuff" was packed and we all piled into two cars (no, one was not just for "baby's stuff") and drove off to see the cascading water fall of Provo Canyon in Utah.  To me the falls looked impressively high, maybe 300 feet or so, I don't know, with three cascading falls.

After getting strapped into place in a stroller that would make a NASA astronaut proud, with its assortment of pouches, sun hood, wind breaker and even a clear, plastic wind shield (!), we were off to make the short walk to the falls.

Baby slept the whole way!  Up and back.

Just look at how excited he was!

It was a quick trip, but I was glad to be there, see it and be a part of it.

What a fun visit it was to see Pace!

Before I left I had to snap a photo of some more of "baby's stuff."

That includes some casual wear for around the house, seen on the right, and active wear for those future road trips, on the left and bottom.

And, for those moments of deep contemplation and ponderment of the universe, there is moving, visual stimulation.

That mobile set includes a very special "football lullaby" accompaniment to help settle the mind and prepare for rest.

Wow, where in the world did all that Redskin stuff come from?

Well, Cindy, it takes a fan to recognize another fan!  I don't remember having all that stuff, but I remember walking into places for visits, or church, or shopping, with a huge amount of baby gear!  Our stroller was pretty simple!

Ha!  Being the father of an almost-three-year-old, don't I know it.  I'll have to ask my wife if she knows about the 10:1 ratio.

Very cute picts.  You're right, there always is a lot of baby stuff.  It does get a bit easier when they can walk.  (at least as it relates to carrying all the stuff).

She knows, Reubs, she knows!

Debbie - yeah, but the stuff gets more expensive, and these days, more technological!  But the ear phones are lighter, and they can carry them, as you say!

Jay,

Traveling with a little kid does require lots of stuff. My grandson is four so the pack mule can now be much smaller.

Two cars.  That kid has attracted a huge entourage already.  And the camera loves him.

What fun!

Tish - no I didn't, but if I go there at least I would know that nobody would beat me...

Steve - spare the mule and spoil the kid.

Mike - too many people to fit into the one vehicle!

Charlie - you gotta start'em young!  But then again, no pain, no pain...

All that Redskins stuff reminded me of the episode of According to Jim.   Jim a huge Bears fan was beside himself when his youngest son (less than 1 yr) favored a Packers stuffed ball. Jim inserted a word underneath the word

                              Packers

                               S---                        LOL

You can direct but you can't choose for them

Enjoy the day

And at the 1973 Super Bowl, Redskin QB Sonny Jurgensen's son, wore a Dolphin QB Bob Griese jersey at the game!  Like you say Don...

Jay, that is funny and so terribly true.  The reason I bought my first van was the amount of stuff that the baby had to have.  Thought seriously about a trailer behind the van for stuff that wouldn't fit in the big Ford van.

You are a regular Comanche Jack, with the pack horse(s) behind!  I bet you had a larger-than-usual papoose too...
