Non-stop flight from Montreal to Phoenix encourages Arizona homeownership

The Arizona Republic reported this weekend that Air Canada was launching a non-stop flight between Phoenix and Montreal. The full article can be found here.

The new direct flights are a result of over three years of discussions between the two cities. In fact, the two city mayors - Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay - flew on the first direct flight from Montreal to Sky Harbor Airport together this weekend. That's a great partnership!

But why the new direct flight? Is there a demand for it? Yes, yes there is.

I blogged recently about how Canadians have now surpassed Californians as the top out-of-state buyers of Phoenix real estate. This isn't surprising given how competitive the Canadian dollar is with the U.S. dollar . . . and our amazing warm weather and golf courses are a welcome retreat for Canadians in the winter months. (See "Phoenix is a big draw for . . . Canadians, eh?").

Additionally, the Arizona Republic reported that "about 600,000 Canadians come to Arizona each year," with many of them looking for either first or second homes. The article went on to quote R. Glenn Williamson, the founder and CEO of the Canada Arizona Business Council, as saying, "We've found that [Canadians are] not just buying small homes. They're buying a lot of homes in Paradise Valley, Scottsdale. And a lot of these people aren't retirees. These are folks that are in their 30s and 40s and moving their companies down here."

This kind of investing - both in real estate but also in Phoenix as a city to start and build a business - is encouraging. It's not altogether surprising as we have good talent and educated people for companies to hire, as well as a relatively low unemployment rate, and great weather to attract visitors and businesses alike. But it's great to see so many people interested in living here and doing business in the Phoenix area.
