"Going Green" with Beaumont's Own "Johnny Appleseed" - Beaumont, California
Everyone knows the story of Johnny Appleseed, the American pioneer who planted and introduced apple trees to large parts of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. He became an American legend because of his kind and generous ways, his revolutionary thinking of conservation, and the symbolic importance he attributed to apples.
Brian Romberg, of Romberg Tree Service here in Beaumont, CA has the same outlook on trees as Johnny Appleseed, that the more trees that are planted the better. That is why Romberg has come up with a plan for Beaumont. To plant 10,000 oak trees and hundreds of fruit and nut trees in our beautiful city, and he is asking our community for help with his efforts through either planting seeds, or making donations for seed costs.
His plan, which has already been sanctioned by the City of Beaumont, is to gather thousands of acorns and collect other seeds to plant across public land near sidewalks, in median strips and along roadways, in parks and other vacant land owned by the public. The tree service owner, who already services trees and handles emergency tree issues like fallen branches for Beaumont, hopes to get started in about two months, and has already began creating a new page on his website www.rombergtreeservice.com to list trees specifically suited for Beaumont's area, which will also contain information on controlling tree pests and diseases.
Romberg hopes that within 10 years these efforts will produce a leafy landscape for all Beaumont residences, and the fruit and nut harvests can become a community event.
