Crackdown on False and Misleading Designations

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Dynasty

Just read an article today that in California the Department of Real Estate is cracking down on agents who use false and misleading designations that could raise important legal and ethical issues. Terms that they do not like are "expert", "certified", and "specialist" on marketing materials especial on short sales and loan modifications.

There are a list of questions for consumers to ask these agents that might be good to send out to friends, family, or clients to help them avoid being scammed like "How many transactions or services of the type you are advertising have you successfully performed?" Ask them to give specifics and contacts.

When I started real estate I got cards from people who got designations that I never heard of. PM? Project Manager. What does that need to do with real estate? BSce? Bachelor of Science. Again what does that need to do with real estate unless it is a degree in real estate?

This might start in California and then spread to other states. It might be a good thing to clean up our image and reduce confusion to consumers.

It's about time that the DRE looked into these agents that say that they have X amount of designations, quite frankly I wonder if the public really cares about these designations? One time I had a seller say to me that all that meant to him was that it was a bunch of letters.
