One of my favorite quotes is by Henry Ford, "If you think you can or can't, you're right!" It's amazing how much more you can accomplish when you simply don't give yourself the opportunity to fail. If you come across the obstacle and you instantly begin thinking about the things that can go wrong, you are setting yourself up for failure. You are giving yourself the opportunity to create all the ways that the task at hand will end in a negative way, starting your path to failure. Please buckel your seatbelts, raise your seat tables and return your chairs to their normal positions as we near upon our final destination of Failureville!
Now, think about the same obstacle and instead of instantly taking a drive through negative town, think positively and don't give yourself the opportunity to fail. Say to yourself, "I will get through this!" and, almost magically, watch your mind start creating ways to, well, get through it; to overcome the obstacle and move forward. It seems so simple but, to be completely honest, it really is that simple. If there is one piece of advice I can give new agents, it's remain positive. Tell yourself you can and you WILL be successful, and don't give yourself the opportunity to not be. It's basically the same thing as when people grow older. Who dies first: the retiree who sits in his chair all day and watch TV or the one who goes to bingo, works in his yard and still travels? If you tell yourself you're old, you're going to grow old and past away. But if you refuse to let your age define who you are, you can be as active as you want to be. It really is all a matter of the mind!
So, if you are a new agent, don't let the dinosaur agent frustrate you because she doesn't think you know what you're doing. You may not know what you're doing but guess what, at some point that agent was a new agent too and didn't know what she was doing. Just keep doing it, stay positive, tell yourself you will be a success and don't look back. Follow Henry Ford's words of wisdom and keep telling yourself you can and never let anyone else tell you anything different. I'm going to finish with another line I actually heard in a song, "Failure isn't a word, it is simply a reason not to try!"
