Pacific Shores Clashes With Local Agents - This is what we call a "No-No"

This is what we call an "Industry No-No"!

Recently, Pacific Shores, a brand new housing developement in Huntington Beach, opened its doors. And by all accounts, it's been pretty busy. I've personally taken several clients over, and I have a few more I will be taking by later this week.

While the community will be beautiful, the location is outstanding, and the models are top-notch, what happened this weekend is the stuff that beginners do. There is no excuse for this, and it's going to be tough to blame this one on "teenagers"!

This weekend, a fantastic listing at 8426 Terranova in Huntington Beach was having an open house. A few different agents held it open, and mysteriously, their signs all went missing? Don't worry, they were recovered... sort of...

{picture to come}

I know quite a bit about this listing as I do quite a bit of business with the Listing Agent, Dave MacLeod. And if you know Dave at all, then you know Dave doesn't play this way. They'll be no retaliation, and he'll probably say very little, if anything at all. He's just a good guy.

But for Pacific Shores, to take down open house signs, which agents often pay to have put up, and throw them in your dumpster (by the way, these signs aren't cheap), is about as low as I've seen in quite a while.

I regularly hold Open House near another newer development in Huntington Beach, and my signs have surrounded them. To their credit, I've never lost a sign, a flag, nothing. And nor should I! High school ended a while ago, and they have their own signs up. I don't touch their signs, so why would they touch mine? There's a reciprocal relationship that exists and needs to exist when it comes to advertising, and honestly, this problem doesn't come up as often as you'd think.

But what happened this weekend is bush-league, and fellas, an apology is in order.

Montgomery County MD has sign ordances.  The county enforces these rules and they travel around in a pick up truck collecting real estate signs: open signs, directional signs, for sale signs, etc. placed by agents who are unfamiliar with the requirements.

The penalty for an "illegal" sign is $500 (to start).

Below are the rules.

The city in which I live also has a sign ordinance. You can't use "bandit" signs and directional signs are under that definition. Are you sure the Code Enforcement officer for the city didn't take your signs down?

Hey there Lenn! Hope all is well. In this case, neither the city nor county were the ones that removed the signs. The signs were definitely removed by the home builder who just opened up their new development. The story is still unraveling, so I may post an update soon. The signs were found in the dumpster on the builders private property. When the city removes signs they don't throw them in someone else's trash bin, they take them to impounds.

Hi Sussie. Yes, unfortunately it was the builder. Huge bummer, and so not necessary. The developement has been extremely busy without needing to resort to this, and I do believe it is a fantastic developement in a beautiful area. This is just a bad mistake, and I'm sure they realize that.

What's funny to is, the home that was holding the open house is extremely different from the homes in the new community. If you are interested in one, chances are you wouldn't be interested in the other.

Perhaps the builder or owners’ association has a rule against realtor (and political) signs all over the property. Several communities here do. Whenever I do an open house in a community that has an HOA, I always check with them first to make sure I’m following their rules. The last thing I want to do is get on anyone’s bad side and, as you said, my signs are expensive.

What ever happened to taht golden rule? Terrible thing to do and it just breeds distrust. One always knows who the good agents are to work with and which raise flags.

That is something that a dirty politician would do to an opponent!!! That is just wrong... If I found out that a building development did that to me I would spread the word around like a wild fire and do everything that I could to keep agents from taking their clients to see that development...There are tons of other brand news houses in the city that they will like just as much, so no need to ever allow your clients to step foot in that office.

That kind of behavior is really low rent.  Professionals should be above that kind of schoolyard mentality.  Signs are very commonplace here, and - while they aren't super expensive - the costs add up.  Hope the situation resolves itself and the offending party grows up.
