How GREEN is your moving  box?

Two years ago,  PHA moved a 6-person law firm from one downtown San Francisco building to another.  Moving a small law firm is not new to PHA, but I had recently become aware of a new type of moving box made of recycled materials and I was anxious to use them. I've talked about them before but decided to remind folks about this useful green alternative to cardboard boxes.

Moving Crate from Recycled Materials

Imagine the benefits to our environment! Cardboard is made from trees. These crates are made from 100% Post Consumer recycled materials.

The real benefit of using moving crates instead of moving boxes?

  1. recycled crates can be used up to 400x, cardboard boxes can only be used 2-3 x before losing integrity
  2. no need to use a ton of packing tape
  3. they're water-proof
  4. they're crush-proof
  5. each one has handles for carrying
  6. they're already assembled
  7. Most Important - they SAVE TIME & saving time either packing or unpacking saves the client $$$$


Here in San Francisco, the local supplier of these crates is ZIPPGO.  The crates are delivered to your current location and picked up from your new location (when emptied), for FREE!  Okay, I'm sure the cost of delivery and pickup are included in the rental fee.... but, they still cost less than traditional cardboard boxes!

Tim, Sherilyn, Kathy & Don - thanks for stopping by.  I know these crates have been around for some time in retail situations, but Zippgo crates are the only ones that are manufactured with 100% post consumer recycled plastics... a good deal for the environment.

Great idea Peggy! Go Green! I believe plastic containers are also less likely to transport bugs. I have clients and friends that have become so paranoid about bugs, that they no longer allow cardboard boxes in their homes.

Mitchell - I hadn't thought about that... and since NYC has been in the news of late, preventing bugs is a great idea.  I'm going to have to find a moving company in NY that supplies them.  Thank you for the great idea!

Hi Peggy - Nice repost. I've never heard of or seen these before, nor do we have a rental service like that in this area. But what a great idea, especially since they're relatively inexpensive. Is the use of these growing since you first wrote this?

Hi Dick, yes, actually.  Especially in the commercial moving arena.  These crates are welll suited to office moves as you can fit the contents of lateral filing drawers pretty neatly.  The only draw back I run across is that they are not good for books - they just become too heavy.

Hi Mike -- yes, they do come in a variety of colors; however, to the best of my knowledge, the other colors are not made from 100% post consumer recycled materials.

Hi Peggy.  The last time you used our service for a client we only had one size, but we now have three different box sizes including a smaller book size box.  All of our boxes are still made from 100% post consumer recycled plastic.
