25 Comments on Shopping for a new laptop - Toshiba anyone?
Hi Lottie,
Ipad baby. Ipad.
Couple that with a cloud back up. You (and anyone who works with you) can access your data from home, work, on vacation - anywhere.
PHil
I've got a Toshiba Satellite that I bought about a year ago. I love this thing like it was my child. I got it at OfficeDepot. I think it was around $600. I'm a geek and have always had multiple computers in my home but this quickly replaced all of them. My main desktop caught a virus and I haven't bothered to do anything with it because I've got my laptop. My netbook is a paper weight now. :)
I did go for the model with the upgraded video card because I am a gamer and also do quite a bit of graphics/video work in addition to web design. I've got the 2.2 gHz with 4 gb of RAM and Intel Core Duo processor. It does everything I need it to do and that's often quite a lot all at the same time. I regularly have multiple browser windows open along with a couple of Excel spreadsheets, PhotoShop, Outlook, several .pdf files, Pandora running in the background and rather than using any of that, I'm often just playing a video game! It's really good at multitasking!
Lottie....I've always had Toshiba laptops.....I just bought two new ones....one for home and one for the office....I bought a Dell several years ago and NEVER AGAIN.....
Good morning Lottie. When I was in the PC era of my life, I have sworn at or by Toshiba. The best PC I ever had (and still running) is my Lenovo. Built like a tank...
Hi Lottie-Computer woes are no fun for sure, I have a HP but I have no doubt a Toshiba is a great machine.
Thank you, everyone for weighing in. I passed on all your comments--especially the techie one--to Gene, who at this moment is busily installing all my program onto my new Toshiba Satellite laptop.
The 8-hour battery on the model I chose beat out the one with a larger screen and fancier video card. I stuck with 500GB hard drive since we also have a 1-terrabyte external hard drive.
Once I'm up and running, using it again, I'll let you know how I'm doing.
Again, Thanks everyone!
Lottie...you live in California! Time to ditch the PC and get a MacBook Air. Seriously. You'll think you died and gone to heaven. Call me if you have any questions or concerns.
Hi Lottie! Glad to hear that you got a new computer and are already at work on it! Everyone I know has had great luck with the Toshiba--of course, I would suggest a Mac but, many don't want to venture away from their PC comfort! Just glad you didn't get a Dell! Their customer service is horrible--I had a lemon and after 3 new hard drives, the fourth time my hard drive crashed over a period of 11 months and they refused to just give me a new machine, hubby said, "Dell no more!" and bought me a MacBook Pro and I LOVE it! After our family has purchased at least a dozen Dells over the years, we're all moving to Macs as the other Dells fail. For our family, it's Dell no more!! LOL
Hi Debe, thanks for sharing your experience. I'm beginning to feel like a dinosaur sticking with a PC, but for now, PC is it. I suspect that when my husband retires--whenever that might be--he'll want to switch to a Mac, and then I will too.
David, you made me laugh! Yes, here I am in the Silicon Valley, with a son-in-law working for Apple, and I buy a PC. Oh well, I suspect at some time--maybe our next computers--Gene and I will both switch to Macs. Not quite ready to do so yet.
Hi Lottie, I thought I would add to your post since I have an HO Pavilion Entertainment PC( Intel Core Processor) I got it earlier this year and love it! Except last month it started really giving me issues that I have never experienced with any computer. So I know I will be looking for a new one soon.
I love all the helpful comments from other members. Thanks for posting this!
Glad you found this helpful, Peggy. Keep us posted on what you decide to buy, and I'll let you know how my Toshiba works out.
My daughter has a Toshiba and I think she's been happy with it. My tablet is a Lenovo and my other laptop is a Dell as is my Desktop and Hubby's laptop. We've been happy with all of them... sorry that I couldn't be more help but will be interested in reading what you settle on and why... I'm always shopping for a new computer. One more laptop in the house that the grandkids use but it's an old Dell that I've had for about 9 years... still plugging along..:)
Lottie, this might be a great excuse to swith to Mac. They last forever, are easily upgraded, and the service is totally amazing. There is a learning curve, but I'm so happy that I did it.
Hi Judi - it's really handy having a few extra laptops around, isn't it? When mine crashed I limped along with my granddaughter's old one, and used my husband's when he was at work. Essential to have duplicate systems in place.
Hi Pat -- I have a suspicion that you're right. But, until my husband also makes the switch to Macs, I'm staying in the PC world. It's really important to have two computers at the ready in case one goes down. Maybe our next ones will be Macs.
Cloud back up. Cloud back up. Chant it over and over. Mozy.com. You'll save some bucks on that GeekSquad. Hope you're well!
Lottie - I can't comment on today's models but a few years back Barrie had a Toshiba and thought it was great until the screen was accidentally broken ..... it cost almost as much as a newer faster better laptop to replace the screen.
Cece, you're right about cloud backup. Trouble is, we tried it once and it was going to take about 10 days for the initial backup! Obviously we need to try again with a different service.
Hi Kathy, so far so good with my new Toshiba Satellite. We grew up in an era where repairs were made to equipment; now, it's no longer cost effective so we buy newer/better/faster and then look for safe ways to dispose of our electronic waste. Seems wrong, but it is the only sensible thing to do.
