Bed Bug Registry - Seriously? What are they registering for?

By

bed bugA website called Bed Bug Registry is the place to go for locating bed bug hangouts. When I first heard of it, I wondered what the bed bugs were registering for: wedding gifts, baby shower gifts (they probably need a lot of those) but I was wrong. The site is www.bedbugregistry.com and when you get there, there's a map showing red dots all over the place. You can click on an area and get the names and locations of bed bug sightings at hotels & motels.

The problem is the bed bugs are not confirmed by anyone other than the people who register them on the site. So how good is this site; how accurate is the info? And, how many perfectly bed bug-free hotels are being registered by over-reacting visitors, or someone with an axe to grind against the hotel. And, they don't tell you how to avoid or keep from bringing them home.

None the less, the site exists; it looks to me like a site that is actually selling a lot of different things under cover (pun intended) of looking for bed bugs.

Interesting article.  What a debacle these bed bugs are!

Bed bugs are becoming a serious problem.  The press only seems to pick up on stories about them in NYC, but I have it from a pest professional that one of the major extermination companies in our area earned $500k + last year treating for them.  People don't realize that these pests will sneak home with you on or in luggage or your clothing.  It's a good idea to place your luggage in tied up garbage bags in the trunk of your car in the summer for a day or so prior to unpacking.  The temperatures in a car trunk exposed to hot sun will kill them.  I don't know what you could do in the winter, other than putting your clothes in the dryer for 30 minutes and keeping your luggage enclosed in bags.  All you need to do is to bring home one pregnant female bug and you've got big problems.

Kasey Group - I agree with you. It's not going to go away quickly either (kind of like the housing market problems).

Eric - you're right; it is a serious problem. Thank you for your info on how to keep from bringing them inside homes.

Hi Toni,  The idea of these critters creeps me out --I did think your registry joke was funny, though!

A registry would be great if the source could be trusted.  Kind of scary how easy it would be for someone to damage a perfectly good reputation using this forum.

Mary - thank you. Yes, they creep me out too. Yuck

Sharon - That was my take on the whole thing. Someone could use it the wrong way.

Toni --- interesting post!    I was "advised" by many before going to NAR, NOT to put suitcases on the bed or the floor, to be sure I did not bring home unwanted guests!

You are right with no checks and balances that site could be dangerous if used by the wrong people.

Toni - I first read about this a few years ago and it was hotels in large cities like Miami, NYC and Orlando that were mentioned.

If you look at the map, Barbara-Jo, now it's all over. But again, there is no confirmation.
