Woman_holding_nose In my South Tampa home, we have a new rule...no passing gas!  The man of the house isn't too happy about it, but it is a must.  He says..."it doesn't smell"...but that's the silent but deadly part.  There is no smell.

Guess what...It's carbon dioxide gas and I don't want it around me or ruining my beautiful environment!

Many people believe the things they can't see or smell don't exist.  Well, I am here to tell you that carbon dioxide does exist and we need to make a difference to stop global warming.  I love our climate in Tampa Florida and I would like to continue to enjoy it for the next 50 years.

Imagine....Tampa being one of the cities that contributes the least amount of carbon dioxide...we could be nationally recognized.  Next thing we know, everyone want to purchase and live in Tampa!  Oh, what a beautiful thing it would be.

Let's work together to limit the amount of gas we pass around each other.  Here are a few simple things we can do to save carbon dioxide:Co2_cloud

  • Change a Light - You can save 150 pounds of carbon dioxide a year by just replacing one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb
  • Check Your Tires - Poor tire pressure wastes gas.  Keeping your tires inflated property can improve gas mileage by 3% and every gallon of gas you save in turn saves 20 pounds of carbon dioxide
  • Wash Your Clothes in Cold Water - Saves about 500 pounds of carbon dioxide per year
  • Plant a Tree - One tree can absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over it's lifetime.
  • Unplug Your Electrical Devices - Unplugging electronics when they are not in use can save thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

We all want to live in the best environment possible.  Here in Tampa, homeowners want nothing less.  One small change can go a long way.

I have replaced over 10 bulbs in our house with the compact fluorescent model.  I only wash in cold water (thank you Tide for cold water).  I have 5 huge trees in my little South Tampa yard and we just bought another one to plant last weekend.  I use Eco-Friendly Pest Control.  And, upon doing this research, thanks to the help of one of my wonderful friends, Melissa Meehan with the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, I have learned today about turning off and unplugging my electrical devices (thank you Melissa).  If you have questions about how you can make responsible energy choices that solve global warming problems and ensure clean communities, please feel free to click here to email Melissa.

Great post- I have only done the laundry in cold water since the kids were about 3 years old! (My 'baby' is 26)!!! During the last few months I only dry the sheets! Everything else, including towels, gets hung in the second bathroom!!! Not as soft and fluffy....oh well, it's clean!!! And I only meet my partner at the office on days we are going separate ways for the day. If we are working together, he picks me up on his way in (I am a whole half mile out of the way!!!) and my car does not start it's engine!!!

I have also started keeping the air conditioning at 78 degrees and having the ceiling fans do the rest! I have stopped baking too, since it raises the house temperature. Baking is now an official winter pleasure!!!

Oh, I do drink tap water when not drinking tea (which I consume liters of!)! And in my ENTIRE life I have only used a dishwasher about a dozen times!!! People think I am nuts! In two of my homes I had the dishwasher taken out and donated. I put in more cabinet space where the ugly power monster had been! When I wash by hand I KNOW the dishes are REALLY clean!

And as far as TV, I watch about 6 hours a week - the laptop is my sinful weakness!!!!

And being a true 60's child, I go by flushing when necessary unless there are guests over!!! How did that go? If it's yellow, let it mellow....................

Leah, OK I'm still cracking up over the title. TLW will vouch for the fact that I am not eco friendly:) But seriously this is an area that I need to improve in. I drive a gas hog and I am not very environmentally conscious. But I am willing to learn and change.

Leah, As usual a great post!!  I went to FPL.com  (south Florida power company) they really have some great tools on how to lower your bill.  One of them was about unplugging devices that are not even on.

LEAH - Great post! Silent but deadly....my kids do that! I love the way you have tied this in to energy savings. This truly is a FUN thing we have going on here! We are not just tree huggers!

How fun is it that you write a smaller check to your electric company each month? How fun is it that you don't have to replace your favorite digs because you have washed them in cold water and they last longer and hold their color better? I hope they are GREEN in color (ha!)

Thanks for sharing yourself in our ECO World! Great ideas!

Keep the Green!

Hi Leah,

Part of the fun in eating is passing gas? hehehe But, rest assured I want you to know that I did plant several new shrubs in my yard this year to make up for it. :-)

P.S.> Think I'm gonna go cook me up some chili. hehehe

A great job of grabbing people's attention Leah!  Conserving more is on my "must do" list.  I will have to see what appliances I can unplug!

Barbara Jo ~ Well, it sounds like you are doing a great job of not passing gas... ;)  Kudos to you for being so true to being Green!  (Or Yellow...haha)

Missy ~ Glad you liked it!  I could give you any answer you want as far as the gym goes...how about.."No, don't go and save the gas..." ?

BB ~ You can do it.  I know it is hard for most men to stop passing gas...just give it a try :)

Matt ~ So true...that is great to know...I was surprised when I found the same thing.  My friend told me that even when a plug is plugged in and not in use, it is still sucking power because it is in "ready mode"....who would have thunk?

Jack ~ Thank you for the nice comment!  I try to do the best I can!

Loretta ~ It's not easy being green, thank goodness my natural complexion doesn't reflect that!

Wow...My house runs on GAS!  Natural gas...and lots of natural male gas as well!!  Ugghh!!!  We actually do have a natural gas community - I do wash my hands in cold water and soap to kil the germs - AND I will begin unplugging my electronics!  I'm right there with the replies above me that I had no idea this would save anything by unplugging the sytems from the wall.  WOW!  Great info from Tampa today!!

I'm really troubled by the fact that I never watch TV, but my TV is constantly plugged in and "ready" to respond. But it's too heavy for me to move alone to unplug it.....

Robin that was a good one!  LOL

Leah - Great post, we do many things to save as much energy as possible.

  1. Unplugging - this is aka Vampire Electricity suckers, I was shocked the 1st time I heard this and it threw me at first, I had no idea.
  2. I have turned off many computers every day and changing them all to hypernation mode after 30 minutes
  3. We wash everything in cold water
  4. We started recycling (even though our immediate neighborhood doesn't participate)
  5. Car pooling as often as possible with others going to the same places, and planning errands around the already scheduled trips "while we are already out"
  6. Turn off the air in the winter and cooler months, when its cold we grab for blankets and extra layers vs the thermostat (turning on the heat - if we do this 2x per year it's amazing)
  7. Replace bulbs with the energy efficent ones only, and watching these things when it comes to new appliances or electronic purchases.
  8. Making sure the kids know its NOT ok to leave lights, T.V.'s and other electonics on when not in use.
  9. Shutting the Refrigerator doors immediately (uses so much energy) Don't leave it open, even for 3 seconds.
  10. Reducing the pool circulation as often (not so much use of pool pump) & bumping the temperator a few degrees when not home or leaving for lengthy periods of time.
