Flowers - Great in a Garden, but What about that Sofa?

Flowers! What a delight it is to see gardens in Spring and Summer, bursting with color and scent. It's a real joy when you're taking a look at a house for sale and the garden welcomes you in this manner. But when you step inside, and it becomes clear the owner loves flowers everywhere, it can make for a dated, overly feminine look that fails to reach the most important staging goal: to appeal to the largest possible pool of potential buyers.

Floral theme

Since the sofa is usually the largest piece of furniture in the room, it will make the biggest impact. No need to go out and buy a new sofa just to stage your home. Slipcovers are readily available in easily accessible stores such as Target and JC Penney, and too many sites via Google to mention here. Brand names like "Sure Fit" let you know that they are made of stretchy material to aid placement on your couch, and the size variety seems to grow every day.

So it's an easy fix to change the dated look to a more up-to-date, neutral one by covering your sofa and getting some new, inexpensive pillows to layer on some interest and color. Once that's done, you may find that something like the floral rug in the photo here becomes interesting rather than overwhelming the room in yet more flowers.

As long as you switch out anything else overly feminine in the room, such as the pink over-curtains, floral-themed artwork, and pink candles in the sconces, you've effectively updated and neutralized the look. Suddenly, your potential buyer pool has grown to include those that just don't like floral prints - which can bring in more men and younger buyers.

Don't lose your audience! Leave the flowers in the garden, not on your sofa.

Hi Kevin - Isn't it funny how things that looked great when we bought them at the height of their popularity can change, in our perceptions, so radically?  Great idea to keep those slipcovers in stock!

I sometimes think I'd want a realtor with me if I ever got stranded on a desert island - you all seem to be so well-prepared!!  ;-)

It kind of looks like my Mom's house.....ALOT of flowers! But she loves it so that is all that matters for now. Selling....whole different story! Flowers gotta go.

Hi Shar - It does have that kind of cozy mom/grandma kind of look - ok for them to live - and for us to visit. But you're right - to sell, not so much!

Judy - LOL ..... I think I still have a carpet exactly like that rolled up in the basement and our couch, with a pattern like that, was replaced back in the 70's

Hi Kathy - Oh, those things that come into style and go out again!  It's funny how suddenly they all look so dated, isn't it?

Hi Dagny - Sounds like the wallpaper on my sister's bedroom walls - left by the previous owner. Very large flowers, kind of loud pattern. I guess it all seemed modern and cool at some point?!?  As you say, what WERE we thinking?

Judy, great post!!

I run into this exact situation all the time in my clients' homes, especially the Seniors.

And, a Home Stager is there to educate the client on how to effectively market their home for sale, which is now a PRODUCT.

I also describe to my Senior clients WHO will be in their primary target-market for their home. And, due to the fact that it will most likely be younger families who are interested in their home, they HAVE to appeal to their senses.

I actually "prescribe" an evening of HGTV watching to my Senior Clients to get a feel for what it means to neutralize decor.

And, Sure Fit is absolutely my cure-all for the furniture.

Great post!!!

Hi Rhonda - Great idea to "prescribe" HGTV - I bet it's a real eye-opener for a lot of people! Thanks so much for your excellent comments.
