North Carolina Rocks! Gems and Minerals, too!

North Carolina has a rich and diverse geologic history.  It can be fun and fascinating to explore.

Quartz

The leading gold producer prior to 1849?  North Carolina

Largest emerald crystal ever found in North America?  Found in North Carolina

Not to mention garnets and rubies among over 300 gemstone varieties!

In 1823, North Carolina became the first state to fund a geological and mineralogical survey.

And you can still pan for gold in Western North Carolina.

And there are more fun geological facts at those NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources links.

But, yesterday, I was running around Cary with my camera and stumbled into the quartz in the photo above.  While watching the slide show below, one should realize that those rocks are HUGE.  The smallest is about 30" and they run up to about 6 feet across.  And there are yards in Cary with quartz rocks in the 8 foot range decorating the yards.

I was capitivated by the layers, veins, varous minerals squished into the rocks, and of course the play of light and the shadows from the tree and the rocks themselves.

Mike- we were amazed when we moved here at all the quartz. We have flower borders lined with the bigger pieces found just in our yard and the woods behind us.

Great pictures! And wonderful information.

Mike...

I have both panned for gold and swished mud for rubies and emeralds in the Cowhee Mountains near Franklin N.C.

With the price of gold topping $1400, I might have to give it a try again!

Richard,

I can see you with an ounce or two of gold dust in a drawstring poke, holding the crowd at Sprayberry's spellbound...

=)

Mike, I took Geology to fill a science requirement to get out of college.  And your post made me want to head for my favorite state to check these out

Pat,

I was rushing around.  And I had to make myself stop and take a few minutes to photo those rocks.

Trying to pause to get shots I know will tickle me.  And I already had passed up a weathered old vacant house with big paint peels throwing long shadows along the wood siding.  Hmmm.  I may have to go back that way tomorrow...
