Motherhood is an enormous undertaking. It first takes up residence in your body and soon consumes every breath you take. ( Sounds a lot like a real estate career, right?) It continues to own a piece of your heart for the rest of your life. Like most jobs, success will not come without dedication and a sizable amount of time and effort invested.
It takes a lifetime to raise a child.
I gave birth to my first child on a cold Chicago night and promptly drifted off to sleep after the longest workout of my life. A few hours later my slumber was rudely interrupted by the night shift nurse standing beside my bed with a crying baby. "Wake up. It's time to nurse your baby." In my exhausted drowsy stupor I mumbled, "What baby?" The nurse snickered, "The one that will be waking you up every night from now on."
Add three more babies and years of diaper changing, potty training, carpools, emergency rooms, homework, sports, music lessons, teenage angst and it was easy for the magical moments of motherhood to get lost in the endless piles of laundry and the constant demands of the family calendar.
It was my goal to invest the best of myself in my children and to give them experiences that would serve them well as they flew with unclipped wings into the world. Soon I was attending high school graduations, then college graduations and welcoming grandchildren as the gene pool expanded.
Last week while searching for an old photo I found a piece of paper titled Norma's Life Goals 1989. The goals were prioritized (gosh, I was so organized back then). My number one goal was: See all my children in fulfilling, productive lives. The blossoming of their lives is a wondrous heartwarming (and sometimes gut wrenching) experience. Time invested in our chldren rewards us, no doubt about that, but it also contributes to the more successful spinning of the world. Heaven knows, the world needs a healthy nudge in the right direction and all the help we can give it.
Motherhood requires an enormous pay it forward contribution. It is a demanding job choice and a lifelong career that returns the efforts invested in immeasurable ways. After all, our country and society will be run by the children we raise.
My handsome clan! Am I enjoying the payoff? Absolutely!
