Literally, five minutes ago, I learned a valuable lesson in Public Relations. I am really excited about my 365 things to do in Worcester County blog for today. I will be writing it up soon. Today is Veteran's day and as it happens, the participants in the parade are gathering right under my office window, how cool is that?
I went down stairs and filmed some of the preparation for the upcoming parade. As it was chilly 39 degrees I went across the parking lot to Dunkin Donuts for a cup of yummy hot coffee. I decided on trying Gingerbread flavor, with my usual order of Extra large, 5 splendas, extra skim milk. Hey, it's breakfast of champions as far as I'm concerned.
As I walked in, I noticed a man in the fatigues placing his order. He was getting 4 small cups of coffee. The girl who was helping him said something to the girl who was taking my order. I later learned that my staff member was the manager. She told the soldier that his cup was free, but not the others. That his buddies had to be physically there to receive the free coffee.
Wow, Dunkin is treating the vets to a free cup of coffee, that's great! Fantastic! What a great P.R. for the franchise.
Now, for those of you who know me, I could not keep my mouth shut. I told the two workers that they should comp all 4 small coffees, since they know very well that the masses of service men and women are assembling right outside their doors. They told me that the cameras would catch this and they did not want to get into trouble. I was appalled at the lack of public relations understanding.
The sweet soldier left saying that it was quite alright and too fast for me to offer to pay for the coffee. I wish I had the opportunity. I am saddened that a man who stands up for our country did not stand up for himself and his buddies and I could not help him.
So here is my patriotic duty to let all know that companies and business people alike should always check their public image in the mirror and in the camera.
Happy Veteran's day!
