Is There a Haunted Circus in Edmond Oklahoma?

By
Real Estate Agent with CENTURY 21 Goodyear Green Edmond, OK

Edmond, OK  I first heard about the "Haunted Circus" about a year ago.  My daughter was heading out there with a group of friends.  They claimed there were empty cages, trailers and more.  Honestly, at the time I didn't really think it existed.  I thought it was probably a teenage legend of sorts.  After all, if there was an abandoned circus in Edmond, I would have heard about it before them!  I figured they would have a great adventure and forgot all about it.

Until this week that is when the topic came up again, twice!  The first time was at lunch with some co-workers.  Somehow the lunch conversation topic steered toward circuses (what, you don't talk about circuses at lunch?).  I asked if they had ever heard of the Edmond Haunted Circus.  Neither one had, confirming my assumption that it didn't exist.  Then the  very next day I was heading downtown with a friend when she asked me if I had ever heard of an abandoned circus in Edmond.  I told her that I had heard of it, but had no idea where it was or if it was even real.  She confirmed that it was real and that it was actually in the heart of Edmond, right of off Kelly Road between Danforth and 2nd Street!

I was on a mission!  I asked every Edmond native I knew if they had ever heard about a circus in Edmond.  No luck.  My youngest daughter and I drove all over the square mile it was reported to be in.  No luck.  Then I decided technology would be my guide.  I hopped on over to google maps and zoomed in on the satellite view.

Sure enough, there is something there!  Was I satisfied with seeing the aerial shot?  Heck no!  We jumped back in the car and headed over there!

You would never know it was there!  Off the sidewalk on Kelly is an old gate and yes, we went through it.  Hey, no judgement about taking my 14 year old on this adventure.  We were on a mission!  This lead us to a cleared field and in the distance we could see a long ago burned structure and trailers.  As we got closer we could see there is alot of debris scattered everywhere and quite a bit of graffiti tagging the buildings.

We didn't venture much further than the outskirts of the area since it was going to be dark soon.  I doubt it's really haunted but it is kinda creepy!  We didn't want to be anywhere near the area after the sun went down!  We snapped a few pictures and headed back to the car.

When we got back home we did a bit of research and learned that until the 1930's it was the site of Gandini's Circus.  Gandini's Circus was a band of traveling acrobats, clowns and animals.  They apparently trained right here in Edmond.  You can learn more about it by clicking here.  They even have pictures taken by folks much braver than me!

How interesting and what an adventure, too to take your daughter on. I miss living in Oklahoma, moved away in 1995 due to a husband's job transfer. I was a licensed agent/broker with Re/Max Metro Group in Midwest City. Great group of agents, too!!
