With the birth of Walmart in 1962 by Sam and Helen Walton, American consumers were provided with yet another popular discount retailing store that slowly expanded offering more employment and increased sales through the years. Today, Walmart has blossomed into one of the most well known and globally successful stores with over 8,652 store chains in over 15 countries servicing over 176 million consumers in a year. The introduction of Walmart in Virginia happened in 1984, the same year Sam had performed the hula with a number of hired hula dancers in Wall Street after loosing a bet to David Glass. Walmart have since then been involved with the community of Virginia with over $16.1 million donated to local organizations within the Virginian community. The new Walmart offers convenience in shopping experience with the pharmacy section connected to the aisles for easier purchasing while consumers do their grocery shopping. The interior design of Walmart enhances vibrant shopping with convenient signage to guide consumers and lower accessible shelves. Walmart also features the customer service desk, site to store pick up location and photo lab located near the store entrance. Moreover, Walmart introduces their energy-efficient technology and eco friendly structure aiming to minimize energy and water usage with light from skylights during the day and LED lighting throughout, and low flow faucets and toilets in bathrooms. The cement flooring of Walmart is created with recycled materials and a recycling program is maintained by the store. Walmart in Alexandria will continue to provide services towards the local community with $17,500 in grants already provided by Walmart Foundation to organizations, schools and the like.
