Sending Your Children to Hawaii's Private Schools - Hawaii Business Magazine

If you are interested in sending your children to private school in Hawaii, you should pick up a copy of this month's (September 2007) Hawaii Business magazine. It has an entire special promotional section, 48 pages, devoted to being "The Hawaii Guide to Private Schools."

You might note that this section is presented by the Hawaii Association of Private Schools (HAIS), in conjunction with the Honolulu Advertiser, and only HAIS schools are discussed. Therefore, the list of schools is not all-inclusive.

The contents of the section are:

  • Choosing The Right School for Your Child
  • Am I Too Late? (Discussed the application deadlines)
  • Applying to Private Schools
  • Making the Most of Your Campus Visit
  • What Are You Looking For?
  • Financing Private School (Private schools in Hawaii, like anywhere, are expensive. Did you know know that, at some private schools, up to 40% of the student body gets some tuition assistance?)
  • Does Accreditation Matter?
  • A Complete Guide to Private Schools (Information on 120 private schools and 3 colleges)

Subjects I found interesting:

Common myths debunked: (1) If you child is not accepted, he is probably in a wait-pool, not on a wait-list, and they are not the same. With a wait-pool, qualified students in the pool are not ranked, but where there is an opening re-evaluated (true) (2) There are NOT certain "feeder schools" in Hawaii, where certain schools require or prefer children to have gone for acceptance into later grades. (true) (3) Reading is NOT a prerequisite for getting into kindergarten (true).

Application deadlines: You should start looking at schools for your child at least the AUGUST before the year of your child's entry. application deadlines can be a early as OCTOBER of the year before attendance.

If you are planning on moving to Hawaii or already live here and plan to send your child to a private school, and have questions, I'd be happy to either answer them or direct you to someone or someplace else that has the answer. I can be contacted at 808-721-8889 or by email yvonne@worrall.com
