What would Oprah do?

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!  Yes, I'm talking fashion, ladies: low-rise pants, short skirts, low cut tops, skinny jeans, high heeled boots, the list goes on.  Today I retired my low rise jeans; they are a size 2 and fit me just fine except ... for the muffin top thing going on at the waist line.  A few years ago, a muffin top referred to a tasty treat, but somehow, gravity and middle-age crept up like a thief in the night stealing my girlish (ish) waistline.  These days, it's about figuring out how to dress professionally and stylishly but not trendily, and to avoid, as we say in England, "looking like mutton dressed as lamb".   I guess the key is to pick a role model, say Oprah Winfrey, Diane Keaton or Audrey Hepburn, and every time you're in a fashion dilemma, ask yourself, "What would ****** do?".  I'm interested in hearing how other middle-aged ladies of real estate deal with the question of looking stylish but not girlish?  Do share!

Rose -  I stick with the classics and realized a long time ago that if I wore it the first time around, I was to old to carry it off the second time.  I too keep that 'mutton dressed as lamb' in my my mind at all times!

Oh, Rose, my poor dear.  I sit here chuckling at your wondering what to do.  You wear a "size two ?"  Holy Guacamole !  I should have such problems.  IF... I were to pick from the three you mention... Oprah Winfrey, Diane Keaton or Audrey Hepburn... well, Ms Hepburn is the most classy, and the most classic, but she is almost from "another time"... and almost from another planet.  <smile>

That leaves Oprah and Diane.  Forget all the rest... I will take Diane Keaton's look every time.  I love it.  Always have.

By the way... I live in Fort Worth... more laid back.  Just thirty miles away is Dallas.  Wow... you should see some of the silly pretentious looks these "chicks"... hens, actually <ducking> try to pull off.

I'm not a size 2- good job on being one yourself though. But I am a good weight and have that muffin top thing going on too. It is usually due to the stress hormone that causes fat to settle in the tummy area. I have seen a lot of articles about flattening our bellies. I bought a book through Prevention magazine about how to flatten. I tried the special water recipe but it wasn't too tasty. But to get to your question; sticking with the classic, tailored look. I have an assortment of slacks that fit pretty well and stock up on pretty tops from Marshalls or Macys to switch around. We have a size 0 processor in our office. She is trying to gain weight. She wears very stylish clothes and scarves.

Susan, yes, classics is the key.

Karen, I looove Diane Keaton, did you see Something's Gotta Give? Great wardrobe (and fabulous house!)

JoAnn, the size 2 is vanity sizing, equivalent to a larger size anywhere other than LA, I'm sure.  Age, stress, menopause, it's all going on.  Classic, tailored is the way to go.

Gay, I don't think we have Brooks Brothers here, I'll break out the suits now it's cooling down.
