SUNDAY IN THE PARK

November 14, 2010

It's early Sunday morning, in fact so early that it'll be another hour or so before daylight begins.  The park light near our bench lights us as though we were characters in a one-act play with the squirrels as members of our audience rather than bit-part players in our performance.

Thanks for stopping by as you do every week.  I always look forward to seeing and being with you.

GAIDO'S FOR CHRISTMAS DINNER.  Since 1911 an accumulation of seafood meals totaling millions have been sold on the Galveston beachfront by three generations of the Gaido family.  In anticipation of the restaurant's 100 years of success, Casey Gaido, his dad, Paulie, mom, Mary Kay, and other family members, have published a cookbook.  It's the Gaido family's most famous recipes surrounded by stories and photographs of the past.

A great gift, you can buy it on-line through amazon.com or directly from the restaurant by getting in touch with Mary Bass.  409 762-9625.  My copy's being autographed by my lifelong friends, Mickey, Wayne and Paulie Gaido, and will be on its way to Dallas later this week.

DR. LYONS TOOTH POWDER.  I've been wondering how many daily necessities of our past were the results of the rationing caused by World War II vs. lack of discovery.  When I was a little boy, most people brushed their teeth with a flavored abrasive powder.  You'd put a dab in the palm of your left hand, and then you'd drag a wet toothbrush across it so the powder would adhere to the brush.  There were two favorites.  Dr. Lyons' and Colgate.

And then came a whole better idea, toothpaste.  The first I remember was Ipana which showed up after the War.  Wonder where it was between 1941 and 1945?

TOM LEHRER.  I'd never heard of Tom Leher before my friend Joan Miarntz last week sent me three CDs of his clever humorous social commentary musical compositions.  He began adulthood as a mathematics professor, but became best known as a Will Rogers style comedian.  Fun stuff.  Read about him, and then you'll probably want to invest in some CDs for yourself.  Tom Lehrer

TOILET FACTS. It turns out that one of the biggest turnoffs among home buyers is the discovery of fuzzy toilet seat covers and knitted paper covers in a home's bathroom.  Folksy stuff, crafts, wallpaper borders, and the overall country look just isn't in today among the majority of home buyers.

THE PADRE PUZZLE.  I have a friend and client who is a Dallas patent attorney.  He's now showing the world his gift for inventing mystery stories and telling them.  His nom de plume is David Harry.  The Padre Puzzle is his first published book.  I've read and enjoyed it, and you will, too.  Available in trade paperback from amazon.com  Another Christmas present idea.

MEATLOAF.  My favorite of the TV chefs is Ina Garten.  In a recent episode, she explained to the audience that she gets lots of letters from newly wed viewers asking for recipes that are next to impossible for a new cook to destroy.  Her best answer was her recipe for meatloaf.  I have made this three times.  And she's right.  It's the best concoction for meatloaf you'll ever make.

PCs.  The tower for my desktop PC has spent the majority of the past two weeks in the shop.  While only six months old, it had developed multiple problems that would cause it to crash, run slowly, and sometimes just decide to reboot.  Just like that!

After multiple false starts, our great computer wizards spanked it into learning how to act right.  Bill Gates is a billionaire as a result of his invention of the PC operating programs, but he really did a number on purchasers and supporters when he didn't figure out how to restrict others from selling subsidiary programs for it that weren't 100% compatible.

Our computer wizards are Bill and P.J. at A-On Wheels Computer Repair, 10620 E. Northwest Highway, Dallas.

MAC.  So because of last week's experience, Patty said, "I'm buying a Mac.  We can't ever again find ourselves at the mercy of a cantankerous computer," she told me.  I think it was the right decision.

POST SCRIPT.  A friend emailed last week, and at the bottom of her message was this: "A person who says it cannot be done is rude to interrupt the person doing it.

I'm so happy you took the time to stop by for our weekly visit here in the park.  I'm looking forward to seeing you next Sunday morning.

Thank you, Miss Barbara!  I had to mess with it some more after you finished reading so I could clean up my errors.

Hope business is booming in Rockwall.  It's about a 20 minute drive for me, so because it's easy to get to, I go fairly often.  That's a diamond in the rough that I imagine will really blossom when the next real estate boom begins.
