Many people in Dallas don't know anything at all about an area of our city called The Cedars.  It is the area south of I-30, across from downtown, across from the Farmers Market. It was a prime residential area in the 1880s and 1890s.  By the end of World War II, it was mostly an industrial area.  What is there now is a mix of industrial buildings, Victorian houses, and vacant lots.  Think Southside on Lamar, Lee Harvey's Bar, the Dallas Police Headquarters, Dallas Heritage Village.

It is also home to a number of people as well as a number of artist's studios.  Next weekend, November 20, is the 8th Annual Studio Tour. http://www.cedarsopenstudios.com.  You want to go.  It is an opportunity to get inside a number of really interesting buildings such as the converted Flour Mill.  The area is small enough that you don't have to drive all over the place to be able to see all the art.  Download an on-line map of where to find the various studios: http://www.cedarsopenstudios.com/2010/map

You can ride the light rail to the area and hop on a shuttle that will be circulating through the area all afternoon.

Friday night, the event begins with an installation of art that features light as an element of the design.  The art is installed at Dallas Heritage Village.
