Snow Shoveling Safety...

Every year we hear about the issues with snow removal.  Once again this year has been no different with this heavy dumping we have gotten.  Read Bill's blog and spread the work.  The life you save may be your own or someone you love dearly.

Every year the ER's are filled with people who have pulled a muscle or thrown their backs out and even Heart attacks.  Some of these people do not survive.   So, once again here are a few tips to help ease the pain...

1)  Stretch!!!  It does not matter if you work out or are a desk sitter, a few minutes of stretching the muscles can save a major muscle pull.

2)  Take smaller scoops!  I see many people buy a shovel that they have no chance in filling and then moving the snow in it.  A smaller shovel will keep you from pulling those muscle's and not over work them or your heart.

3)  Take a break.  Young or Old...sedentary muscles need a break.  Stand up straight and give them a chance to relax a few seconds.

4)  BREATH!!!  As long as you are relaxing the muscles, a few deep breaths will help regenerate the entire body.

5)  Hydrate!   The air is cool and dry.  You are taking in dry air and moisturizing it before expelling it back into the atmosphere.  Also, your body is most likely sweating a bit.  Small sips of water frequently is better than an entire quart in two gulps.

6)  Don't do it all at once.   I get it...you are still young, at least in your mind, but Rome was not built in a day.  Pace yourself!  Just make sure you are done before the Football game comes on!

7)  Hire it done!  Hiring an able bodied person to do this work for you may be cheaper than a visit to the ER!

8)  Exhale when you lift!!!  This is the most important thing of all.  If you hold your breath when lifting, it puts undue pressure on the heart.  Talk to any body builder and they will tell you the same thing.  That is why most yell when they lift, it is the exhaling that they are doing.

There, I hope this saves a few sore muscles, some out of place backs and most of all...a few lives!  Please be careful out there!

Good repost Randi. Every year it seems to get harder, and I tend to push myself to get it done.  I need to slow down and take it easy. Thanks for the good info, and thanks to William, also.
