Motivational Monday: Don't be coy!

Motivational Monday: Don't be coy!Motivational Monday: Don't be coy!

coy (koi) adj. 1. Tending to avoid people and social situations; reserved. 2. Shy or modest.

Being somewhat shy in real estate is a huge disadvantage and must be overcome or eventually you'll put yourself out of business. It is essential to be assertive when it comes to gaining a listing or negotiating a sales price for a buyer / seller. Taking a class on assertive training, seeking a support group or joining the local Toastmasters club will help. If you are timid and reluctant, your peers will know that, may feed on your weaknesses, rendering you ineffective with clients.

In this industry YOU MUST:

  • Meet and greet
  • Be face to face
  • Test the talk
  • Walk the talk
  • Look self-assured
  • Show self-confidence

Anything less than the above will not do, so Don't be coy! Force yourself. Push Yourself. Be Firm and push ahead for yourself and for your clients. They will gain from and appreciate your efforts!

Wanda, any one who knows me knows I'm very bold and outspoken but Toastmasters is a great organization for us out spoken ones as well, teaching a little tact.

Wanda, a wonderful play on words. I definitely need to work harder on overcoming my shyness and try to be a bit more aggressive as well. Thanks for the inspiration. (smirk)

Being shy in this industry is a recipe for disaster. We were always told as children not to talk to strangers. But if we don't, we'll be out of business before we know it!

If you are shy by nature, it is very important to get in to a group that makes you open up. To build  your business you need to be open to talking to strangers and being coy, isn't going to get you much new business.

Chuck, That is one way to become more outgoing. Toastmasters is a great organization!

Ron, You are right, it works for any type of job or work situation where you are in direct contact with the public!

Thanks Charlie! I appreciate that!

Carol, Taking advantage of opportunity is a great way to push your business forward. Well Done!

Bob, I have many colleagues who are Toastmaster members and they know how to effectively speak in public.

Ha-ha! You're welcome Rich! Great pic...there's nothing shy about that Koi!

Craig, Or as I have been told, there are no strangers, just people you haven't gotten to know!

Glenn, Yes, it's true, creating balance is necessary to be effective too!

Smirk acknowledged my friend! Have a fantastic Monday Ed!

Great post about some of the things you need to be able to do as a realtor. Being able to talk, communicate, and comfortable in your own skin are so important.

Wanda, this sure was a mighty fine blog post to read. Folks sure do need to get right out there in front of and talk to folks, so they know just who they are.

Wanda, if working in real estate can't change a person to be thick skin, probably nothing will, haha.  I was a very shy little girl, and the funniest thing is I always work in people business industry.  I could never saw myself working with the public, but on the other hand, I was glad I did.  It helps me to get out of my comfort zone, how to interact with different people, it sharpens my social skills. (it's not like I am a social butterfly, haha)

I’m a prime example of what Toastmasters can do for you. I used to stutter – badly. My freshman English teacher at Texas A&M University recommended Aggies Toastmasters, and it only took a few months before I was able to coordinate my brain with my mouth.

I was very shy as a child too but outgrew it as I got older. You have come a long way too Rita!

Russel, Your story is a great testimonial to Toastmasters! I plan to join as well.
