America Recycles Day, 11.15.10
Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce all ties in with today, 11.15.10, which since 1997 is known as America Recycles Day. Americans generate 250 million tons of garbage a year, what is your impact on that? Recycling is a key component to sustainable living and plays an important part in building rating programs such as LEED by USGBC and the National Green Building Standards (NGBS) by NAHB.
Sometimes it is hard to figure out where, what, when to recycles; Earth911.com provides that service for free. You can find local drop off locations for metal, glass, plastics, paper and even hard to find local drop of for such items as electronics, batteries, hazardous products and more.
Also check with your town hall and local refuse disposal area, aka Dump, for items to recycle, many towns have designated dates for hard to recycle items such as hazardous waste, paint and metals.
There are many ways to recycle. Composting is one that can save up to 19 to 24 percent of the US municipal solid waste ending up in landfills. Composting is the decomposition of plant and organic materials to make earthy, nutrition rich substance that is excellent for adding house plants and garden soil.
Every consumer has an impact on the environment from products that we choose to buy and use to how we choose to dispose of them. As consumers we have the opportunity to consider a products life cycle from raw material source, production, distribution, use, repair and maintenance, disposal or Recycling, Reuse.
