Southborough Massachusetts - Favorite Landmarks

MonumentSouthborough, Massachusetts is famous for its quiet, pastoral atmosphere and convenience to public highways.  With its own MBTA station, Southborough is a great commuting location for anyone working in Boston or any of the surrounding areas.

As a town that prides itself on its lack of commercialism, it stands as no surprise that there is no MacDonald's, Wendy's or Burger King to found within its limits.  But if you drive into the back roads of Southborough past Breakneck Hill Farm you may spot the beloved belted Galloway cows or "belties" as the locals call them as they peacefully graze on the surrounding conservation land.

Riding around the town of Southborough you will notice that the Sudbury River surrounds much of the area. The reservoir adds to the ambiance of the town and actually makes up one quarter of Southborough's total square footage.  In your travels you may easily find yourself driving across the tree-ringed reservoir areas with a glimpse of an occasional small island.

Downtown Southborough is also known as the center, or its fourth village.  Main Street runs through this area and is the exact geographic center of town.  Downtown is populated with a few small shops, a number of small businesses, the Southborough Town Hall or "Town House" as it is called and the Southborough Police DepartSouthborough Town Hallment.

Adjacent to the downtown area is the Fay School, an independent coeducational boarding school.  The school educates approximately 465 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 9.  The Fay School was founded in 1866 by the two sisters, Eliza Burnett Fay and Harriet Burnett Fay.  It is well-known learning institution in the Metrowest area and sits on a grand 56-acre campus.

Part of the downtown Southborough area also includes the prestigious St. Mark's School.  The Tudor style structures on thisSt. Mark's School 250 acre campus house more than 330 students.  Originally an all-boys' academy, St. Mark's is now a co-educational prep school.

If you are planning a move to  Southborough you may want to take a scenic drive through the area.  Any time of the year is a good time to take in the sights of this beautiful and tranquil town.

Claudette, you describe this idyllic Rockwell painting of a town perfectly, there is something decidedly New England country side (personified). I spent many a lazy day in a canoe on the Sudbury River, and I think that is why I found another river to live on years later in NH.

Steve:

I find it to be very tranquil in Southborough and in this entire area.  I can completely understand why you decided to follow it up with life near a lake in New Hampshire.

I was out for a drive about a month ago in Maryland and saw a handful of belted cows and immediatley remembered your post on them.
