One of my pet peeves is driving through neighborhoods, trying to locate the house I am to inspect, and see no visible address numbers from the street.  That, or they are cleverly placed in the same illogical spot on every house, but not at all visible from the road.

Such was the case with this house.

Do you see an address?  I don't either.  But it's there.

I knew it was the right house because the one next door had a very visible address.  But not this one.

There are VERY IMPORTANT reasons for have a very visible address!

It could be that Grandma wants to come visit, sure.  Or the mail man gets the right box.  Or so your guests arrive in time for Thanksgiving dinner.

But a VERY IMPORTANT reason is so Emergency Services can find your house in a hurry, particularly at night.

Have you found the address yet?  It's there.  Right on the mailbox!  The numbers are the same color as the mailbox!  Do you think that on a rainy night, even with a great flashlight, an ambulance driver is going to be able to see that?  Neither do I.

I have heard the urban legend that there are jurisdictions which fine people for hard-to-find address numbers.  I don't know if that's true, but why wouldn't we want our addresses to be very easy to see?

My recommendation:  If when you pull up to a house and the address numbers are no where to be found, suggest that difficulty to the listing agent and make the change!  Somebody's life might depend on it!

You made me laugh with your numbers deal!

The REASON: About 5 years ago, my community had ALL the numbers on the houses CHANGED in order to make it EASIER of emergency vehicle to find the house.  My old house number was 5.... my new house number is 38225!  And this is easier because???????

And my next-door-neighbor went from number 4 to 38219.... the house is about 25 feet away from my house!  Where are the houses numbered 38221 and 38223????

Who came up with this plan???

Michael - and today my first inspection had no numbers!

Donald - ha!  I have those too.  Life could be made easier...

Tina - so share this one with them!

Kathy - a bureaucrat!  Need I say more?

Jay - As usual, you make an excellent point! I cannot even imagine having small numbers on a house that cannot be easily seen from the street!

Barbara-Jo - I dropped a radon off two days ago where there were no numbers and my first inspection yesterday had no numbers.  Go figure...

Agreed, it is so important from a safety standpoint to have the address clearly visible from the street.

Me too Liane!  That is a very interesting name - is it from a family member, or a creation of your parents?

A really good point Jay.  A few years back, in our county, our street numbers were changed and we were encouraged to have them large enough and in an appropriate space.  I just noticed my own numbers, whicg were clearly visible on the mail box post , are now partially hidden by the newspaper holder put in place by my carrier.  Margaret C.

That is so true.. I came upon one recently with no address.. logically there was a house that fell into the right order so i photographed it.. then just to be on the safe side, photographed the one next door also... when I looked it up in tax records, they also both had the same owner's name... ok.. which one was right? the one I didn't think was and the one out of sequence!! good grief!! i found out from the bank sending me an old appraisal that had the tms number on it..

These are important points Jay. Several years ago, Boy Scouts came through our neighborhood looking for visible house numbers. The could earn a merit badge for it.

I come across this problem often, and it can be difficult to guess at an address in streets where the numbers apparently don't seem to follow a discernable pattern.

No time to start like now!  How about some step by step blogs, like I did with my living/dining room floor?

It's been years ago, but I still remember when a listing agent told my client's termite inspector that the back door would be unlocked and the seller wouldn't be home.  I don't remember why the inspector went to the wrong house, but the back door was unlocked and he went in.

I had the very dubious pleasure of telling a homeowner that he got a free termite inspection and had termites - and that a nice young couple would soon be their next-door neighbor.
