This Is Another "Mac User Only" Post.

With the recent launch of iWork '08, Apple has has added new frame features to their Pages application. I've been using these frames for my photos both here and on the Real Estate Shows Blog. I used it again on photos from our mini AR gathering in Las Vegas.

Jennifer Wilson emailed me asking how I was doing it and and wondered whether it was a Mac thing. It is. There may be a program out in PC land that will allow you do the same things, my purpose here is not to say there isn't. My goal is to let my Mac friends know how to make it happen if they like it.

You must have to have iWork '08.

Then, open a blank document in Pages.

Drag a photo into the page and select "Frame" from the image edit menu.

pages

Once you've applied the frame, click outside of the image to get rid of the selection points.

Then, do a screen capture of the image. Press Shift-Command-4 at the same time. This will allow you to drag a selection around your image and will save that image to your desktop.

You can select from any number of options that will create a 3d feel for the photos. I love the one above, because it really helps the image jump off the page. But others accomplish the same goal as well. Here is that same image, taken on my iPhone while flying into Vegas, displayed in a couple of different frames.

Interesting and appeals to those of us who used camera and created photo albums! I wonder what the Gen-X and Y's think of it....just curious....

Charles... I think Gen-X and Y's still appreciate good looking stuff. Good design is never going to go out of style. This kind of imagery moves the page from flat to 3d and, used correctly,  can be very effective.

Jonathon... i love my iPhone!

Hey, the more Mac posts the better.  You know they are all just jealous they haven't moved up in their computers yet.  I don't have iLife '08 yet, I am waiting to get a "whole package" with the new OS in Oct/Nove.  Got it bookmarked, thanks!

Cool!  Thanks for sharing. I bought iWork 08' and iLife 08' but haven't had a chance to play with either yet. Design is so important.

Now that I have an iPhone I can see how passionate people become about their Macs.

I wanted to go the Mac route 15 years ago but at the time the software for education for the kids was limited and I just stayed with the IBM compatibles. That is not a problem now. I know Mac is much better for graphic design work and have seriously considered it but once again I have heard from some agents that they can't use a Mac for certain MLS systems. Here is another great reason for a Mac. I am going to have to see if there is anything for the PC that will do anything similar and so simply. They look just great.
2:03pm • #10
I use a mac and some programs and MLS do not work with Mac. There is a program called paralells that allows you to run mac and windows at the same time. This allows me to do everything a pc can do and a mac. If you don't have a mac, you are wasting to much time and effort.

Hey Jeff, I tried it but I did not see the border option on Pages.  I upgraded to '08.  I love the new look of iPhoto, the events make everything so much easier.  Somehow I don't think Pages has upgraded itself though.  I am going to have to look into that - when I click on about Pages it says version 2.0.2.

I did not know about the shift command 4 trick.  I was going into Grab and doing a capture.  Your way is so much easier.  Is there a site where  you learn all these cool tricks?

Maybe I ought to get a mac computer now. It seems like Apple has a big share of the electronics - Imac,Ipod,Iphone,Iwork. What's next -That I don't know. Good post.

I don't have iwork08, but I'm going to get it. I've been a MAC user for 20 years and I love them. I have a PC too, but I hardly ever use it.

Thanks for the info!

Looks great and your examples are a nice touch.  I bought the newest version of iLife and love it...but now it seems I need the new iWork 08.  The thing I love about Mac computers is that they have so many killer applications built in or made specifically for the Mac that you don't have to have nearly as many programs as you would if you were running a PC.

Maureen and Dawn... the new border option is only available in iWork 08.

Maureen... As for the tricks, I'm sure there is a place and I'll look for one for you. I've been using a Mac for over 20 years, so I've forgotten where I've learned most of the stuff I know. And, as I get older, I'm starting to just forget period! :)

You can do almost the same thing with a PC if you have Photoshop.  I just did it for a listing presentation and caught screen images of my placement in Active Rain, Google statistics and search engine placement.

Regardless, I think I'm going MAC for my next tablet purchase.  There's an aftermarket out there and I've heard way too many good things about MAC lately not to explore it.

Jeff, that's pretty cool. Some of that I can do on Word. I use to be a MAC user but when I got into Real Estate Mac's were not compatible with the Real Estate world. I did love my Mac, though. Nice lesson for the Mac user.

Thanks! I'm fairly new to active rain and I am bookmarking your blog. I've been an avid Mac user for years now.   People who use windows just don't know what they are missing. I use parallels to access windows and the MLS. If it were not for the MLS I wouldn't bother with PC compatability at all.

Shannon... yeah, I'm a photoshop whiz, but I still like simple for stuff like this.

Ana... I haven't seen a point and click way.

Gena... I knew you were a MAC lover! :)

AmberEyez... parallels is the bomb, even though I only use it to access Realtor.com picture path info and Microsoft's Go To Meeting, it's nice to be able to have it when I need it.

Bob!... MAC envy is normal. Don't sweat it. :)

Jeanette... I'll hold you hand through it, don't worry.

Maureen... it may have left your old iWork folder intact.

love it, love it, love it!  MacHeads Unite.

Another great use for this is to apply the same effect to all of your MLS shots as a gentle branding and differentiation of your listings and yourself...  Ie our company color is aqua and I would like an aqua frame around all of our MLS shots...

Hi, I got it to work up to a point....after taking the photo, I can't seem to save the picture to my desktop in a format that will allow me to upload to the blog site.  It seems to want to save it as a Word or PDF. So after all that, I can't seem to use it.

Ruthmarie... I've altered my Mac settings to save screen captures as a jpeg directly, but you can do this by opening the pdf in "Preview" and exporting it to JPEG.

Ruthmarie... the default export for screen capture should be PNG, which you can upload directly. I think you may be trying to save the doc. Read the instructions above again... you have to do a screen capture.

I figured it out - it was because the export "options" that came on the screen didn't include png - nevertheless that was the default, but it wasn't obvious.

Jeff,

I am thinking about getting the new Mac Pro.  I have never used a Mac and am a little nervous to spend the money.  I want to be able to create training presentations and edit web-pages, Blogs, photos, and business type movie clips.  I am also an active Realtor that needs access to the MLS (I have heard this is difficult with a Mac for some reason).  Is there anything I need to be worried about or any suggestions you might have?

Awesome!  I just switched from a PC to a Mac in August and have been going through the one on one training with Apple, as well as learning the Adobe CS3 suite on the new platform.  I did have to install Parallels so that I can access my MLS and use an Outlook plug in for real estate. I've been having a great time with my MacBook Pro with Keynote, video clips for listing websites, etc.

Thanks for this great tutorial!

Hi Jeff, I am a "newbie" to Active Rain and I have a Mac. I am a Realtor in La Canada Ca. at Dilbeck. I used a Mac for years in my previous career in the television industry so I was bound and determined to keep it as a Realtor. Maybe some day the rest of the RE world will realize what they have been missing. Thanks for the tips re pages. I will check it out. Hope life in Santa Clarita RE improves soon. La Canada RE is not moving too much, high-end property is having trouble due to the loan issues.

Jeff, stumbled on this post and I'm glad I did. As a Mac user of two years, I consider my PC side 'the dark side.' People have no idea until they buy one just how pleasant it can be to use a computer. Sure some things are a little different, but it doesn't crash, it's very intuitive. You can tell the people who wrote the software actually understand how people use computers and they think like I do.

Picnik does the frames for photos. @TBoard either wrote a blog or commented on it. But nothing is as user-friendly as a Mac! Thanks for the tip.
