Romantic Vacations on Islands no Longer only for the Filthy Rich

What can be more romantic than spending time with your loved one on an island? You’re right in the middle of nowhere having left all the hullabaloo of modern lifestyle behind on the mainland. There’s a wealth of natural beauty around you; yours to savor and explore at leisure; yours to enjoy in an unadulterated manner.

Wait, what’s stopping you. Do you think that such extravagances are only for the rich and powerful? People who can spend money at the blink of an eye, without looking back to see if they’ve made a dent in their savings? People who have private jets and planes that will take them to exclusive island destinations at the snap of their fingers? Well, if that’s what you’ve been thinking all along, I must say you’ve missed out on quite a bit.

It is true that having plenty of disposable income opens up more doors for you; but, there are several reasonable islands waiting to be rented and explored by you, if you have the willingness to explore. Take for instance Pretty Joe Rock. This is a really tiny island in the waters off Marathon in the Florida Keys. In fact, there’s barely enough room on it to accommodate more than a two-bedroom home in addition to a few clusters of mangroves. This tiny getaway spot can be hired for less than $3,000 a week and that is a deal considering renting islands in most other exotic locales would run into 5 figures. According to owner Bob Rainek, he gets renters of all kinds ranging from blue collar to white collar and from couples to families with kids.

If you want to expand your experience a bit more, there’s always the Robinson Crusoe experience to be had. There are some islands that dispel with the full staff service and leave you and your partner or your family to your own devices. While you do get a house to live in, you have to bring your own food and make your own meals. In a few cases, you may have to rough it out in a tent of your own. It’s not just more exciting feeling like the last human beings left on the planet, it also works out a lot cheaper.

No matter what budget you may have, it is quite possible to find a good island to rent. It may not be in the Bahamas and you may have to be content with a vacation closer to home, but an island is an island, right? Your experience isn’t going to change just because the distance does. Keep your eyes and your options wide open. That’s how good things are bound to find their way into your life.

I wonder if there is Wi-fi and cell coverage for 3K? No Realtor could go to a place without both.

Wow Faina, I think I will have to consider Pretty Joe Rock for a second honeymoon when our 25th anniversary comes up. If my bride of 12 years puts up with me that long.

Faina,

Lovely idea, and reasonable.  I agree with you that a week without phone and internet would restore sanity.  Thanks for sharing this tip.  a

Mike,

That's the spirit.  I would love to be able to shut off from the world, drink a bottle of wine and just relax.  Most time, you get back from a vacation needing one.
