Wondering How Long it will Take For Your Site To Rank on Google? Well, Keep Wondering.....

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Personal SEO - Website SEO and Real Estate Marketing

You started blogging, working with some SEO (search engine optimization) techniques and now you wonder why you are not on the first page of Google yet? How long will it take for your site to rank well?

Search Engine OptimizationHere's the answer: No one knows for sure.

Not the answer you wanted? Sorry, there is no magical 3 month 12 step program for getting on the first page. If there was, I would be rich.

Of course you can get on the first page with your AR (Active Rain) blog within 10 minutes which is great. But your actual real estate website is going to take some time and some major tweaking. I have clients that expect first page results on a brand new domain and site within two weeks and that is just not realistic when we're talking Organic SEO.

  • ORGANIC SEO simply means working directly and indirectly with a web page to gain rank slowly, effectively and naturally rather than paying for sponsored pay-per-click keyword advertising.

This organic SEO approach takes time to build as more keywords are used in content, more back links are generated and the site becomes more of an authority on it's main subject. Orgainic SEO is not about one technique but about all techniques working together to create a perfectly optimized site.

As SEO professionals, we have no control over when Google will crawl a site. We can ask, plead, beg and hope but there is no guarantee as to when or how often we can make that happen. The more fresh, new and revolving content a site has the more Google has something to come back for again and again.

The more back links with the main keywords hyperlinked to the site, the more Google will assume the site is known for that keyword. The longer you purchase the domain even carries weight. Google will think the site is a fly by night site if the domain is only purchased for a year.

Speaking of domains, If you have a lot of domains that are keyword rich, they are useless unless they are properly redirected to the same site (if it's only one site we are talking about here). You don't want to go to ColdwellbankerSantafe.com and CBSantafe.com and find the same content on two different URL's. Google can and possibly will penalize the site for duplicate content.

There are many ways to gain rank, slowly but surely. And the best part is, once you have a site that is well optimized it should stay towards the top for a while even if you take a break from blogging and SEO for a short time.

You are right on regarding the time to rank.  While I have little control over Google, I have decided my focus is to drive eyes to my site instead.  I just have not decided if my time should be to drive to my site or to drive to a landing page.  But your observations and knowledge are helpful to me.

Thanks for the honest SEO information Tammy.  So many SEO experts talk about guarantees, so I guess that is always a red flag right out the gate!

Oh yes, Don't ever believe an SEO company when they say they can guarantee specific results in a certain amount of time. Unless you pay-per-click, there is no guarantee. It's constant effective work that yields results. Thanks for the comments!

Thanks Tammy. How about doing something on sites that re-direct. I don't know much about this but I believe my site is a redirect. What I mean by that is I purchased my domain name years ago when Microsoft Office offered free domains and emails. I assume this makes it harder to get "crawled".

Having several domains is a good idea but really only if they are keyword rich. Having, for example, BobTimm.com is fine but if you already have http://www.minothome.com. This is a much better keyword rich domain. You can buy domains such as Minothomes.com Minothomesforsale.com MinotNDHome.com etc... but not buyfromme.com

This is not helpful to your site. BUT all these do nothing if they are not redirected properly. Wherever you have purchased your domain such as godaddy.com make sure they are 301 redirected. THis means  no matter what people type in, how you show up on search engines and for what keyword or domain, all resources point back to one site. (unless you have actual different sites with different content on each like a realty site and rental site) You domain provider will tell you how to redirect these properly.

I Tammy, thank you for the post.  After reading this I am wondering if I am forwarding my domains to the wrong site.   At Keller Williams Realty each agent is given a website.  My website is www.EReape.yourkwagent.com  obviously this is a difficult web address for clients etc. to remember so I decided to purchase and use www.EllaReape.com which is forwarded to my KW site.  I have also purchased half a dozen other domain names that are related to my business which I also redirect to my KW site.

My question to you is which domain should these other domains be redirected to increase my SEO?  I am now beginning to think that I should have forwarded them to www.EllaReape.com and then on to my KW address.  Will that have any positive effect on SEO?

Thanks you in advance for your response

Ella

Ella, The first site you gave me www.EReape.yourkwagent.com doesn't appear to go anywhere or be valid. Is there something missing?

You want to use the domain that you direct all of your keywords to. Such as at the bottom: Luxury Homes in Southern New Hampshire.

If you don't know whether your domains are set up properly type them in the address bar and see where they go. If they go to EllaReape.com BUT still say in the address bar the address you just typed in as with every consecutive page you go from there, then they are not redirected properly and Google is seeing them all as separate, DUPLICATE sites. BAD.....

If you type in the domains and they all are redirected to Ellereape.com and the address at the top changes to Ellereape.com, then they are redirected properly.

Use one main domain to direct all additional domains too. Don't redirect each site to each other and back and forth.... to confusing. Make sure each domain you buy is redirected to your one, main site - again, this means that the URL in the address bar changes back to the main site no matter which domain you enter. Does that make sense?

PS - Your site looks good but I would try and make sure you add more keywords to the homepage and highlight them and link them to different pages in the site. Google doesn't pay that close attention to menu's and side bars.

Hi Tammy, you are right my actual web address is  http://ellareape.yourkwagent.com/   Which just proves that if I can't even remember my own web address neither will my clients or anyone else for that matter.

Interesting, after reading your response I followed your advise and typed in my various domains www.LivinginHollis.com , www.LivinginNH.com etc. and all but www.EllaReape.com (which is just one of my many domain names) changes to http://ellareape.yourkwagent.com/ which is my main site provided by my Keller Williams.  I wonder why that is?  With that said does it make any sense to forward these other domains to my www.EllaReape.com for consistency as well as promoting me?

Thank you also for the advise regarding my website.  I was thinking of adding links to the homepage.  I'm just not sure the best way to set it up without it looking to crowded.

Thank you again Tammy!

Have a great day

Ella- Check out my previous blog about the linking keywords in text - It will tell you how to do it and more importantly give examples at the bottom. There is a good balance cause you don't want keyword stuffing but you want enough also.

Yes, make sure all domains go back to only one site because Google will see them as two separate sites with the exact content. You can spin the marketing to clients however is easier, but for Google to rank you well, they all must revert back to one site with one domain as the main one. Hope this helps and really do check out that other blog as it talks about keywords and where you service.

Ask me anything anytime... and remember, I can always do this for you! ;-)

Tammy, is domain redirecting a valid strategy for good SEO or just something to do with the domains you might have lying around going unused?

I am NOT one for having 18,000 domains just for the sake of it. It costs money and I am not about wasting money for the sake of having every domain on the planet. HA... BUT to give you an example, we own personalseo.com and some other yahoo has personalseo.net and it's not a similar business at all nor does he do any work. I would love to have that domain as well but am just waiting until he goes away to get it. I optimize only one and the other is just in case someone didn't know where to go for sure. HAve one website, optimize the heck out of it, and if you need another domain that truly makes sense, the redirect it properly and you should be good to go.

I read someone here on AR not long ago who was suggesting buying several domains and redirecting them all to your main site. I know people who used to buy up domains in bulk then try and sell them. The fact is domains are not that important anymore, with good SEO and quality backlinks you can dominate SERPS for any term w/o the keyword in the site, que no?
