Hashtag Airport Codes, Twitter
If you're a Twitter user, you'll know what a hash tag is. If you don't I'm going to tell you. The word hash tag, is and of itself is confusing. Is it capitalized? Is it one word or is it two words? As near as I can tell, the hash tag is a spin off from the old IRC channels of yesteryear. (Internet Relay Chat) This was a fascinating tool which at the time I am writing, I'm thinking I should really go and check it out again. It's been years! Internet Relay Chat allowed millions of users to communicate at the same time in public channels, or they could create their own private channels. The channels were preceded with the "#" sign or number sign. At any given time there are tens of thousands of simultanious chats.
IRC could be a scary place to hang your hat though as it was often where hackers and their ilk lurked around, just waiting to ruin someones day by sending all sorts of internet scaries your way if you "pissed them off". With the advent of Twitter, Skype, Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, and a host of others, IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is pretty much being dropped by the average user who finds IRC just a little bit too overwhelming and intimidating.
For the purposes of this post, I am going to refer specifically to posts to the city where I live, Calgary, AB. During the composition of this article I found it too difficult to speak generically about hash tags to make any sense at all.
Hash tags are used to focus your particular posts to a specific audience, say in Calgary, Alberta. Many people from Calgary use Twitter to find out what is happening. If I don't specifically use the word Calgary in my post, I will often use the hash tag instead. The hash tag for Calgary is #YYC.
Not all Twitter users will follow channel #YYC and not all Calgary Twitter users will follow "Calgary", therefore my feeling is that it might be appropriate to use both.
There are no hard and fast rules about using Twitter hash tags. If there is no such hash tag as the one you are proposing, it will be created instantly. For example I could create a hash tag #newhashtagsthatnobodywilleveruse, so long as it fits in the 140 character restriction placed by Twitter. You could then post to that "group" by doing a search for "#newhashtagsthatnobodywilleveruse" and you would see only your own posting.
It stands to reason that if Calgary, AB uses the airport code #YYC as it's hash tag, it follows that other cities would also likely follow suit. With the Houston RainCamp coming up (#IAH), I posted a tweet using Twitter announcing that I am attending. I wanted to direct my tweet to people in Houston and also those in Calgary, but found it difficult to find a list of hash tag codes to reference.
I have therefore compiled this list of hash tag airport codes so that you need not spend the time researching hash tag airport codes that I did! This list includes Canadian & US hash tag codes. Have fun tweeting.
This is a public service advisory which is not about Calgary Real Estate. I hope you find the article helpful.
