I know, I know - it does seem way too early to be posting this, especially in light of the recent spell of absolutely delightful weather we had just last week. I hear tell though that that nasty four-letter word is just on the horizon...yes, SNOW is in the forecast in the next week! Love it or hate it, it's a fact of life for anyone who lives and works in the Durham Region and surrounding areas.
With Halloween a belly-aching, sugar-coated recent memory, it's time to welcome our next seasonal visitor, Santa Claus!
Durham Region Santa Claus parades kicked off on November 13th with the first parade of the Season in Pickering which was presented by the Kinsmen & Kinette Club of Pickering. It was followed in the evening by the Ajax Santa Claus parade which was followed by the annual lighting of the town Christmas Tree in Heritage Square at City Hall.
This coming Saturday, November 20th is the not-to-be-missed Bowmanville Santa Claus Paradewhich starts at 10:30am. The route starts at Church and Temperance streets and goes west on Church to Scugog where it turns south to King St. The parade continues east along King to Liberty, then south on Liberty to Memorial Park where the parade ends. You are encouraged to take non-perishable food, toys and clothing as Teens 4 Teens will be collecting items along the parade route for disadvantaged children in the community. The Bowmanville Parade usually includes some special guest appearances by some of the animals from the Bowmanville Zoo!
The Beaverton Santa Claus paradestarts at noon on Saturday. The route begins at Mara Road and Franklin Street and continues to Mara Road and Simcoe Street. Then along Simcoe Street to Osborne Street. Osborne to Bay and finishes at the Fairgrounds.
Santa's Parade of Lights, the Oshawa Santa Claus Parade, starts at 6pm at the Oshawa Centre. You can get a sneak peek of the floats in the parking lot at the Oshawa Centre starting Saturday morning. From the Centre, the parade goes east along King Street, turning south on Centre Street to John Street. West on John Street to Elmgrove and back tot he Oshawa Centre.
Take your letters to Santa to the parade as Canada Post letter carriers will be traveling along the parade route to collect the letters before making a special delivery to Santa Claus at the North Pole!
On Sunday, November 21st, the Newcastle Santa Claus pararde begins immediately following a 5:30pm fireworks displace. The parade starts at King Ave and Arthur Street and goes west along King to Given Road.
The following weekend, Saturday, November 27th, the Uxbridge Santa Claus paradetakes place beginning at 11am. The parade starts at Centre Road and Brock Street, east along Brock Street through downtown, then heads south on Franklin Street.
Cannington's Santa Claus paradebegins at 11am. The parade starts at McLeod Park on Peace Street and continues north on Peace Street to Cameron Street. West on Cameron Street to King Street. South on King Street to Park Street, east on Park Street to Laidlaw Street, south on Laidlaw Street to Davidson Street, east on Davidson, ending up back at McLeod Park.
The Port Perry Santa Clausparade begins at 5pm from the Port Perry Fair Grounds at Reach Street and Old Simcoe Road where it heads east on Reach Street to Simcoe Street, South on Simcoe Street to Queen Street, east along Queen Street to where it ends at Water Street.
Saturday, December 4th, the JCI Whiby Santa Claus parade begins at 10am at Brock Street and Manning and goes south on Brock to Trent Street.
Saturday, December 11th is Sunderland's Santa Clausparade beginning at 6:30pm at the arena. From the arena, the parade goes east on Doble Street, south on James Street, east on River Street, south on Cedar Street, west on Water Street, west on Jones Street, north on Maple Street, east on River Street, north on Albert Street, west on Park Street and ending back at the arena. There is also a free skate at the arena from 4:30-6:30pm.
