We have a common tract built house in Cary, with many of the typical compromises that come from plucking a plan from a page and plunking it onto a plot.

Yet as time goes on, I begin to see how fortunate we were when we bought it.  It is nearly perfectly situated for enjoyment of the natural light.  The light swims around the house and plays in the trees from dawn to dusk.  From the common living areas, the daily show is most pleasant

In the mornings, the early daylight is filtered through the trees on the south side and lights up the breakfast nook where I have my first coffee.  From there I can watch it move through the trees behind us as the sun rises.

Those trees on the south side provide great shade for the hot sun of summer.  I don't know what they are, but they green up a little late, so we have the shade when we need it most.  And they shed their leaves a little early, so we have penetrating sunlight on cool fall mornings.  Perfect!

I recently had the pleasure of touring several home, architect designed renovations and new construction, and wondered at how hard they labored to make the most of the benefits of natural light in the dwellings.  But, now, when I view homes with clients, the natural light is something I gauge, if only with myself.

Nice that you appreciate your surroudings.  We have a lot of rain, which equate to gray days.  Natual lighting is something I try to point out to my clients.  When home owners leave all the lights on for our tour, I click them off . . . to see how "the light swims around the house."  :-)

Carla,

Yes it is nice.  We lived in cold, gray Pennsylvania where sunshine was at a premium year 'round.

I like having bright natural light!

Hi Mike I enjoyed the photos and especially your descriptions of the playful light. So well captured and the combining words tell a wonderful story.

Most of our colored leaves are on the ground now...

Beautiful photos, beautiful area, I have never been in NC except in summer and spring... well I drove through a couple of times on the way to and from Florida in the winter.
