"House" is Not a Keyword - And Other Mistakes You Might Be Making

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Personal SEO - Website SEO and Real Estate Marketing

Keyword Meta TagsI tweak a lot of websites and every time I start with the keywords, I find the biggest mistakes agents have done when setting up their website. "House", "Home", and "Real Estate"; these are the keywords most commonly used. These should not be keywords and they are not to be singled out in your meta tags.

"But, that's what I do! Shouldn't that be one of my keywords?" Not unless you want to compete with 18 million other agents all over the world. Keywords need to be clearly defined and intentional. Don't throw 50 keywords in there because you probably can't optimize a page that well for 50 keywords. Google likes about 6-12 keywords max per page. You probably can have unlimited amount of pages in your site, right? So use the best ones for your homepage and space the rest out over your other pages.

For example: "Sedona Homes" is a popular keyword for that area right now with moderate competition. The combination of the keywords is what makes it unique and specific. You don't want people from Alaska searching for "homes" and Alabama agencies come up. This makes no sense. You want to be specific to your area and exactly what people are searching for.

If a town or city itself shows a lot of searches but not a lot of competition then use it for your real estate site. "White Salmon WA" is a great keyword for real estate in the Columbia Gorge area because there was little competition but thousands of searches.

If rentals are big in your area, promote this with all the variations of keywords you can think of such as "Fort Rucker rentals", "homes for rent in Fort Rucker" and "Enterprise homes for rent". Each of these can then be directed to the page specifically for rentals.

One More Thing ~ Don't use your name as a major keyword unless you are very popular in an area and people know who you are by name from commercials or billboards. Less than 10 people per month probably search your name so go with your area and use your niche to carefully choose the best keywords for each site. Optimally, 2-4 words per keyword phrase is perfect.

It's really hard to rank above the big guys. I'm in a small city and after a false start, I am starting to move up, but if I don't get to page one, the effort is basically wasted.

Thanks for the great advice. I have been told to put commonly searched words or phrases as my keywords. I guess they didn't really know what they were doing or I misunderstood them. Thanks for the clarification.

Wayne  It is hard to go ahead of someone that has been at it for years. Stick with the longer more detailed search phrases and go that route rather then the big "Tigard real estate"

Tommy - You were a commenting fool last night!!! WHOO HOO.. You want to use the phrase Texas Hill COuntry for sale rather then Texas real estate. Go for the more detailed ones. And thanks again!

Tammy,

Thank you for the great advice, I am currently working on building my website and this can be so overwhelming.  Your tips and advice are greatly appreciated.  I'm off to work on changing up my key words - YES, I DO have real estate in there, what was I thinking? :)

As always great advice Tammy!  Sometimes keywords are different in different parts of the country too.  That's why I love Google keyword search.  I can ask Google if the keywords I think are being used actually are, AND if I have a chance of ranking for them...  Sometimes you'll be surprised at what you find out!

Thanks Tami and Pamela for your kind words. Google really helps decipher the best keywords to use and focus on. I would be lost without it. Thanks again

Tammy, it is amazing how many people use "click here" as keywords! I myself was guilty of it until I learned more about SEO, but it's still a challenge to know just which keywords to pick...so many...

Keywords is always a challenging topic. I think I've already done a decent job on this topic only because I've concentrated on it- for my website. I'll need to double check my blogs.

I too just came across this due to a reblog and am glad I did. It seems like SEO is a matter of constant tweaking, revisiting and editing. I have to say I don't work on it as often as I should but at least I don't feel like I know nothing at all. LOL

Thanks for a great read.

OK, this is really eerie. I start reading your blog and you mention Sedona Homes.  Then I check to see where it is linked!  That is my office.  I am a Re/MAX Sedona realtor®!  YIKES!  I have goose bumps.

I know enough about SEO to know this is no coincidence!  But you do a great job of making it appear transparent to the SEO process!
