The Power of One - The Secret to Supercharging Your Real Estate Business

From an early age we are taught that more is better. More toys are better than just one. More friends are better than just one. More tools are better than just one.

In many aspects of our lives (More dollar bills are better than just one!) this is completely true. I intend to show you how running against this common thought just might be the secret to your success!

As is our yearly ritual, we recently took a few days to put together a business plan for next year. The first step to business planning for us is to determine where our business came from this past year and years prior. Then we look at the money that we spent and compare it to our business streams. It is always a shocker to see the results but this year was especially so. We were so out of sync that I have to wonder how we are still in business!

I won't go into the gory (bloody) details but I will share this with you: the things that generated the most business for us are completely free and the things we spent money on generated the lease amount of business! Keep that in mind the next time the phone rings and the person on the other end is trying to sell you...?

What does that have to do with the power of one? (you might be asking?)

It is simple! Find the one thing that has generated the most business for you and focus the majority of your efforts there. For me, it came down to just one thing, face to face NETWORKING.

There is a saying in the advertising world that goes like this:

"Fish where the fish are."

They have realized that there is no need to spend large amounts of money to create your own market. All they need to do is advertise to the markets that are successful. So many of us are busy trying to create the next niche market that we skip the pond that is loaded with the biggest fish. It is quite common for realtors to follow the trends around until they go broke.

There is an agent in our office who doesn't do anything except call FSBO's and expired listings. Her GCI will be more than $200,000 this year. The only thing she does is sit on the phone and make calls for 2 hours each morning. She doesn't blog. She doesn't network. She doesn't pay one penny in advertising. All she does is call expired listings and FSBO's every morning.

Did you know that computers actually slow down when they are multi-tasking? Although they are so fast that we don't notice, they actually do each of the tasks at a fraction of the speed that they would if they were totally dedicated to that task. People are the same way.

With that in mind, what is the one thing that brought you the most business this past year? If you doubled your efforts in that area, could you double your business? Probably.

Find the one thing that works and keep doing it.

Great advice, Mark.  We tend to think that we have to keep moving forward to keep up.  We should not keep re-inventing the wheel.  We should concentrate on what already works and move on when that well runs dry.

Great advice Mark.  We're all so busy trying to keep up with all the latest things that might bring us more business that we spread ourselves too thin and wind up not concentrating enough on anything.

Find "the one thing that brought you the most business this past year", and concentrate your efforts on that  - is great advice!

Jane - You are so right. We tend to always be looking for the next "new" thing. We need to stop and realize that the old things still work just fine.

Lora - I discovered that when I was trying to keep up with every social network ever devised. I finally settled on the 2 that actually help me build my business and I ignore the rest. I was spending too much time trying "to make the others work." Shouldn't they be working for me?
