This Is What I Say

Perhaps it is a human flaw, a fatal one.  You drive by an accident and are addicted to seeing the crash.  You watch the News to see who killed who and for whatever reason on God's Somewhat-Green Earth they could do such a thing.  Read the 'Inquirer' and you want to see the title, "Brad Pitt Has Michael Jackson's Love-Child.'

There may be no better way to measure this B.S. than our own Back Yard.  If it is controversial in any nature, it gets attention.  That folks, is a cold & hard fact.  Active-Rain is no different than life itself, if there is a train wreck, we all want to be involved in seeing it.

I got yet another email late Friday, from somebody in AR who is on the mortgage side of things.  They told me I should write more Real-Estate Driven Material.  I'll address that in a moment.

If you want an idea on how things work, on how everything is sculpted and melted into our minds, there is no other place to start....Than The Media!  Example, there is a gentlemen who works in our building selling and financing Mobile Homes.  He pretty much has the market cornered at this point.  His mouth runs like a duck's behind, yet I'm always willing to listen.  He came up to me the other day and put his hand on my shoulder, "How are you guys doing?"

I peered at his palm on my shoulder and then looked him in his very eyes, "No immediate complaints man! How are things going with you?"

"Great, I'm making money hand over fist...it's amazing.  I was worried about you guys though."

"Why were you worried about us?" I asked.....

"Well, I heard about that big lender going out of business, going bankrupt."

"What lender are you speaking of man?"

"I don't know, they are big and hold my mortgage."

Call it a fleeting guess but for some reason I knew exactly what lender he was referring too.

"Do you mean Countrywide?"

"Yeah, that's it, the ones who went bankrupt, I read it weeks ago."

Ok, most of what I have just written is as verbatim as it comes.  The guy I was speaking with is a pretty wealthy chap and has been, in his own right, in the financing industry for quite some time.  I thought to myself how greatly the media's output affects what's input into everybody's minds.  While I don't think the guy I'm speaking of is the sharpest 80 pound Crossbow Pistol in the world, it says much about how people interpret the media that sometimes defines us.  The Media is Business, Bad News is Good For Their Business.  Even if they have to embellish it to a level to sell more press, accurate or not.  They figured out, long ago, that Controversy Creates Cash.

Active-Rain, on a similar note, is just as susceptible to this.  It goes back to the human flaw thing.  When a cat fight breaks out at Michael Vick's humble abode, people react. (Especially the Dogs).  They just do.  It's human nature that when the proverbial crap hits, or seems like it is on the way, to hit the fan, people Stay Tuned.  If you want comments on your post, be controversial!  It may not garner you RESPECT, but you just may have the 15 minutes of fame everyone seems to be seeking.

In closing (My English Teacher In College Hated Using That Term...Ever), I'll go back to the email I received, once again.  Let this be known, throughout the winds and airs of Active-Rain and the Internet itself.  You wanna know why I don't write Hard-Core Real Estate Stuff more often?  Because I am who I freaking am!!! That's why.  I write whatever it is I do.  I can and will write Hard-Core Real Estate info at will, but I won't unless I choose too.  While Active-Rain is brilliant in the concept of providing Real Estate Information to consumers everywhere, it's also brilliant on another level.  You get to know the people behind the Profession, you get to experience some of the best writers on earth...

So, you wanna know why I don't devote every waking second to writing soley about Real Estate?  I live life muchacho, how about I write about that...Real Estate is just a portion of what's going on...

Jason....  Just write what makes you happy. I know that we have talked about this several times. You have to be comfortable and do what makes you happy.

On the other note of the media... and what some people think they hear. This part always cracks me up. And some people just hear what they want to hear.  Anyhow....  off to bed.

Jason - this is too weird - tonight when driving through Bend (our closest town) I saw a sign on a reader board that said - A career is great - but remember you have a life - wow that was powerful for me - as I drove home on a Saturday night at 9:30 pm after showing property for 6 hours on the only day my beloved husband is home.  I hurried home and kissed his cheek and told him I appreciated him.  Then I sign on to AR and read this - I am glad you have a life - and you write a lot about Real Estate - maybe that person just knows you have such a great gift they want more from you :o)  I am glad you have a life - I am still looking for that wife though

Hi Jason, The comments from Jeff and Tesa , two people who likley do not know each other captured two different aspects from what you just said. That is as interesting as the post, well....Ok,almost,lol

The media ...don't get me started. Honestly I wished I was a billionaire publisher. Don't we all...

I would get the writers to write and before I published I would interview them and ask them what  they were thinking,  writing crap like this. Then , I would fire them and before they left the building, I would re-hire them on the promise that they tell the truth from now on. Every story is 360 degrees. I want it all.

By then I would now be only a millionaire publisher, retire to Miami and laugh every day at my folly.  At least I was willing to Pay to Play.

Misinformation travels at the speed of light and for some people it is the only bright thing in their life, lol

Jason, keep living life muchacho.  And keep writing and letting us know how it's going.  =)

I gave up watching the news a very long time ago.  It broke my heart just a little more each time I heard the atrocities that go on.

When William is ready to retire, I hope he'll consider calling me for that lovely Miami beachfront home =)

Jason, I know some stuffy people on AR would like to keep everything about real estate, but you know what?, that is just too boring.

I always enjoy your posts and I know what you do and how you help people.  Your writings tell alot about your personality and who you truly are.  Keep up the good fight.

I finally gave up on trying to keep everything just about the biz at hand.  Now I am writing posts on things I enjoy outside of the office, and if I irritate the wrong person, then they did not get me and I did not get them.  Its that simple.

Great Post

Jason - Aren't we all taught to "think outside the box" and to "think big"? I've never read someone who writes with the passion you do. Squelching that would be like trying to capture the wind and keep it in a box.

Write away on whatever is in your heart. The world would be a much boring place without your voice!

09/09/2007 04:37 AM by Linda Scanlan (A Fan of AR)

Man, you know one of the quickest ways to rile me up is to tell me someone's been telling you how to blog.  AGAIN.  But you said it so well, now I have nowhere to go with it.

But Grrrrrrrrrr anyway.

My favorite bloggers .... my favorite people here are the ones who tell me about themselves.  The ones who only write about work ... I still haven't got to know them.  Maybe I would like them.  I just don't know.

09/09/2007 04:46 AM by Sarah Cooper (Real Estate Shows)

Jason,  I wish these kinds of people would just HUSH up and stop telling people like you or anyone else on AR how to write and what to write about. Why don't they just worry about THEMSELVES???  Perhaps it's that old adage....those who can DO, those who can't TEACH....or in this case, envision themselves as the resident teachers here at AR.  Bah humbug, I say.

It's like my Emmeline story....someone, who shall remain nameless, told me my 'ghost' is a demon and that I should email them for help as they have one of the pre-sanctioned tickets to 'heaven' and I so clearly need to be saved......anyone writing about 'ghosts' has to be on the dark side, right ?? (or so they think in their limited and intolerant little world)

Jason,  You are right we do have a life. I think people who only focus on all the negatives in the industry really need to get a life....

People ask that "How's the market question".  Like they caught us enroute, between the house and the therapist dealing with depression.

Jason. I have noticed that some of the folks on active rain (whether they have big followers or not,) Are all caught up on their ego. If its the one who writes about business nothing but business, or if it's the one who can write about anything and have the masses respond.

I can place comments on some posts, and KNOW that they will periodically recheck what I might have going on and comment on my post. Then there are others who don't bother.  The don't bother big shots I won't waist my time with any more. You are one person who speaks from your heart, and takes the time to check in on the folks who comment on your post. That makes you the super star you are in my book.     :)

Hey Jason, we love you for who you are. A blog is a online diary. Write what you want. Yes, this is basically a real estate forum and there are thousands of posts on them, so my advice to people is NEXT.

09/09/2007 08:05 AM by Missy Caulk Ann Arbor Realtor Ann Arbor Real Estate (Keller Williams Ann Arbor)

Hey Jason - I think I love you, still!   ;-)

I am what I am, green eggs and ham!

To heck with those who try to tell us what to write about - write about what you want to write about, what moves you, what strikes you, what irks you, what you want us to know, etc.  Sweet Sarah can set you straight about that - just ask her!

Yep, I do!

You know if you didn't have so many people telling you what to write you probably would only write half as much...  Haven't they picked that up on most of your writings?  You write want you want...duh.

Anyways...controversy always sells and deaths and tragedy always make the news...guess nothing good ever happens out there.

I love controversy......   while I will always be the "black-sheep" in the family... the "rule breaker"... I am always the one to push to topic to get to the "heart" of the conversation....... Don't "skirt" an issue with me.... I want the facts... reality... life...   The media is all BS and there to scare the living heck out of the world... I am convinced of that.

And with all that being said... blog your heart out... while everyone else sit's back....  people like you and I will make the rest shake their heads.... why...  because we are REAL and probably more successfully than the rest because of that fact alone

Tee Hee .. jokes on them....I live life muchacho...  Haven't heard that word in forever..but thanks for the morning giggle....

Jason, I'm pretty new here, but I have to say that the bloggers I enjoy the most give me real estate AND personal posts.  You keep doing what you're doing and be true to yourself!  Your passion shines through everything you write and I, for one, love it!

09/09/2007 09:59 AM by Lisa Heindel, New Orleans West Bank Real Estate (Latter & Blum Inc. Realtors)

I'm pretty sure there's enough hard core real estate written here. It's the hard core Jason that made me subscribe....

'Clap, clap'...Bravo Dahling!  You can't be all things to all people.

And why would you want to be?

Carry on!!!

09/09/2007 01:16 PM by Tracey Thomas Calabasas, CA Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty)

If you wrote hard care real estate all the time, I am sure I wouldn't be subscribed.    I like who you are. You can't please everyone, so write what makes you happy!

A career is great - but remember you have a life ...Thesa Chambers

And this is why I "can" just do when and how I want. Because I choose to have a life. I also choose to write anything and everything...no matter if it's real estate (localism) related or what. I write "about hawaii" and stuff like that...which is real estate related....and it also helps our community gear towards what this community is about. For me, it is also about who I am and I believe my writing relays to the consumer what kind of attitude I have as well as give them a little personal insight about me...the person.

09/09/2007 06:11 PM by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman (RA), e-PRO HAWAII Real Estate & HAWAII Relocation (Century 21 Liberty Homes -Mililani, Hawaii)

Jeff - The media amazes me.  People's interpretation of the media is even more amazing.

Thesa - Awwww, wonderful story.  Kind of weird, the timing of things.  I'm still looking for that wife as well:-)

William - Wow, I wish to the high heavens you were in charge of the media, if just for a day.  I'm happy that you are in the Real Estate Profession though, we are lucky to have you on our side.

Maggie - I'll put in a good word for you, just save me a spot at the beach....

Gary - Thank you.  I can appreciate where you are coming from there.

Linda - Wow, I love the way you put things.  You make me seem much better than I probably am, but thank you!

Sarah - My favorite bloggers are those that write a little about everything passionately and articulately.  You are among my favorites (top of the list actually) and some of them write very little about Hard-Core Real Estate.

Jo-Anne - I used to amuse them by thanking them for their input and bowing to their obvious 'omnipotent' skills of blogging.  Now I just shoot them a snide email and carry on.

Matthew - It amazed me that the guy I was speaking about, who actually is in our business...to some extent, was totally off in the reality of what is REALLY going on.

Chris - Lol, you have got to hook me up with yours....

Diane - Well put.  I knew before I got in this game that there was going to be heavy egos out there, in reality, I'm not impressed by those who have them.  I'm more impressed by people like you.

Thank you Missy!  I love you too, you are one heck of a contributor in all facets!!

Ann - You know I love you as well, you seem like an amazing person!  Sarah has reminded me time and again...and I will listen to her and you.

Bob - I've never been known as an eternal optimist per se, but the negativity I sometimes see with the media is quite ridiculous.  Want to roast them sometime:-)?

Desiree - I have the same role in my family:-)  I wouldn't have it any other way!  We would get along just fine...

Lisa - Thank you my dear.  This can be a great forum and it's wonderful to have you here.  I look forward to your contributions.

Jennifer - LOL, Jason can be hard-core.  Thank you Jennifer!!!

Tracey - I love that, thank you sweetie!  Have a great rest of the weekend!!

Ginger - That is a fact.  I learned that years ago so I act according to who I am the best I can.  It's people like you Ginger that make that decision a no-brainer in retrospect...and reality.

Bryant - Nature of the beast for sure.  Sic Big Bertha on them, they won't stand a chance:-))

Jason, Ditto what Linda said. I am not a writer, but that does not mean I can't recognize one. Your posts have both "in your face" and "behind the scenes" components that actually make me think!

Jason,  Success brings haters, jealousy, and envy.  Thanks for writing the way you do.  Also, thanks for the kind words about us over on the Carnac post.

Linda - Remind me not to go over my feelings on Rate Locks, Good Faith Estimates, & the Clear To Close & 25 Year Mortgage Option....I'll instead write about why I like Pearl Onions with Peas.

Sis - I hope it wasn't a hairball I created...

Karen - Thank you, and I would mention that you may just be a writer.   You seem to have the components.

David & Kristin - I call it like I see it, you guys are something special....
