Fortunately for those of us who live in the mountains of western North Carolina, the real estate market marches on although the drum beat is a bit slower than the past. Prices are holding in the Highlands/Cashiers area but with fewer Buyers available, inventory has never been higher. It is definitely the time to buy and wise Sellers are open to negotiation. Highlands and Cashiers have, for over 100 years, been a haven for refuge from the summer heat of the southern region of our country.
Last January I visited Kenya for 26 days as the guest of a priest in Malo. While there I met and worked with children orphaned as a result of AIDS and other conditions rampant in Africa. Although poverty is prevalent, the people of Kenya have much to teach us. They understand the value of relationships and family. They spend the bulk of their free time in conversation with others or visiting with family. And, they are generous. They may not have much in material goods or food, but what they have is given freely. Returning to US was quite a shock to me. All of the "stuff" in the malls and the foodcourts was overwhelming. How much do we really need? and it never seems to fill us up. As a result, I am determined to share my wealth with the children across the ocean who have no one to fill them up. These children have more courage than I can ever hope for - for often it takes more courage to live than to die. How easy it would have been for them to give up life. They are the lions, we need to give them the roar.
If you are called to contribute to the lives of these little ones, please let me know - I will put you in touch with the orphanages for a direct, tax deductible contribution.
