Beyond the headline, More Americans Likely to Rent the author(Mary Umberger, Los Angeles Times via Chicago Tribune, November 21, 2010) wrote that the key word of the year was "cautious".   I say the better word is OPPORTUNITY.  Where some will see doom, gloom and all sorts of negatives - why not look towards the positive?

She writes in part...

while Americans are not giving up the American Dream, and while about 84% said owning makes more sense, the percentage who said their next home would probably be a rental has grown(33% from 30%  June/July 2010 report vs a April 2010 report).  Renting makes more sense according to some of the respondents.   In addition, those currently renting, said it "makes more sense" to continue to rent.

So, how do we as Realtors use this information?  How about the very viable investor market?  How about taking that call about leasing a property?   I have personally had lease clients turn into buyers and eventually sellers.  Can't you see the possibilities in the situation?

Cautious/Schmautious(yeah, it's a new word).....possibilities and opportunites are there....

Tucson has always been a renter's town. Less than a 50% rate of home ownership. investors need to be really careful and buy in the lower price ranges to give them a competitive edge in rental prices. Lots of rental competition here.

It is our job to help the individual know the difference in ownership and renting.

Hey Jon - that's incredible.   I did not know the high rental percentage in Tucson - sounds like some opportunities with some good investors.  Thanks for sharing and your comment.

Tim - you are absolutely correct.  I think the premise that everyone should own versus rent is a fallacy.  It depends on the individual situation and so many different factors.  Thanks for your thoughts.

Seriously!? We have to get the difference known indeed! We have to make them understand what Renting and Owning is.

Michael, I agree.  Someone has to own properties for folks to be able to rent.  What will they think when landlords are doing well and increase the amount of rent?  Plus, interest rates are so low why wouldn't you want to own your own home and reduce what it cost to move ever year or so?

Hi Ron -- I have returned to review old posts I have written to see how I can address a subject differently or put a new perspective on a subject.
